First time exhibitor, Taylor Young, produced the star attraction at the Young Farmers Overwintering competition at Dingwall, when her champion, a 565kg Limousin cross bullock sold for the top price of £3600 to Georgia Fraser, Little Croy.
The calf which was bred by Michael Robertson, Fodderletter – who bred the three top placed bullocks – will be shown in the summer by Georgia.
Judge Angus Greenlaw, Sheep Park, found his reserve in the first prize haltered heifer from young Caithness farmer Shayne Mackay. His Limousin cross was purchased at the first district calf sale at Dingwall from showman Iain Grant, Seaview (Slattadale) and sold for £3200 to Kevin Grant, as a replacement female for his Lochend herd, Caithness.
The heifer also produced the highest profit margin for Shayne, raising £1200 from its purchase price.
The judge bought his choice of champion and reserve in the home-bred sections. Supreme was a 560kg Limousin bullock from Georgia Fraser that made £2500 with the runner up being another of bullock of the same breed from Ellie Mann that realised £2100.
Highest live weight gain was a Limousin cross bullock bred at Fodderletter that had put on 230kg over the winter with a daily liveweight gain of 1.51kg. It was shown by Hayden Taylor-Ramsay.
Carrie Hamilton won the award for the best stock person, judged by Ian Anderson, Harbro.
Overall, 23 YFC bullocks averaged 442.5p with 16 YFC heifers cashing in at 486.7p.
Outwith the YFC cattle, 319 store bullocks sold to 615.4p for 260kg Blonde D’Aquitaine crosses from Achany, Lairg, or £2550 for a 650kg Limousin cross from Pookandraw, Killen, to average 438.4p.
Heifers (228) averaged 426.9p having sold to 523.8p for a 420kg Charolais cross from Wester Craiglands, Fortrose or £2500 for a 680kg Limousin cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall.
A 315kg Limousin cross topped the 12 young bulls at 425.4p, for 2 Kingsburgh, Snizort.
