Champion heifer makes £4000 at ANM March show and sale

Aberdeen and Northern Marts achieved a top price of £4000 for a Limousin heifer at their annual March Show and Sale of store cattle at Thainstone.

A total of 1217 cattle — including young bulls and weaned calves — were forward for sale. The show was judged by Gavin Ross, Wardhead, Strichen.

Leading the way was the pre-sale champion, a March 2024-born Limousin heifer from the Cruickshank family at Coleburn, weighing 484kg. The reserve champion title went to a 738kg British Blue cross steer from S Smith, Sunnyhill, which sold for £2980.

Beyond the show classes, bullocks averaged 452.1p, reaching a top of 595.6p for a pair of 366kg Limousin crosses from Govals, Forfar, and reaching a top of £2820 for a 740kg Charolais cross from Stoneyhill, Peterhead.

Heifers averaged 443.2p, peaking at 712.1p for a 330kg Limousin cross from Coleburn, Longmorn, and to £2800 for a 598kg Charolais cross from Little Kildrummie, Cawdor.

Bulls sold to 459.5p for a 370kg Charolais cross from Burnhaugh, Netherley, and to £2200 for a 572kg Limousin cross from St Sairs, Colpy. Young and weaned calves peaked at £760.

LEADING awards

Champion pair or pen of four, born in 2025 - 428kg British Blue cross heifers from P Cooper and Son, Govals, which sold for £2420.

Best heifer, born November 2024 – 428kg British Blue from G and J Greenlaw, Balgairn, which sold for £2750.

Best animal consigned from the Islands - 604kg Limousin cross from A Foubister, Netherton, which sold for £3300.
