Four in a row for Goldies at Carlisle Limousin show and sale

Limousin CEO Paul Rainey said the breed continues to dominate the commercial trade across the UK, with strong confidence driving investment in reliable, high-value genetics, which in turn saw an almost 100% clearance.

He added that there was a 'tremendous show of bulls' to suit all systems and budgets with a strong demand for ease of calving, conformation and growth characteristics. The majority sold to commercial buyers at accessible prices.

Leading the way – for the fourth time in succession – was a bull from Goldie family, from near Dumfries, who secured the senior and overall championship.

Their show and sale leader this time at 38,000gns was Goldies Vainqueur, which was selected supreme by judge, Richard Priestley of the Brontemoor herd. Vainqueur is a 21-month-old embryo-born bull bred from Goldies Olive – the granddam of Goldies Vista the reserve champion in February that sold for 55,000gns. The first calf born by the 32,000gns Goldies Torpedo, Vainqueur was knocked down to Haulfryn Farming, Spon Green, Buckley, Flintshire.

Having previously landed the overall championship here in May and October 2025 and February, 2026, the four-in-a-row is a testament to the strength of the Goldies herd and the family behind it. The family is also believed to have achieved a record by lifting the champion and reserve honours for the first time at the May sale.

Their reserve champion, Goldies Velocity, another embryo calf from Goldies Olive sold for 18,000gns. This 18-month-old is a son Goldies Juggler which also produced the 60,000gns February champion, Goldies Volcano. Velocity headed home with John and Margaret Penny, Mintlaw, Peterhead.

Second top price was 27,000gns paid for James McKay’s Ampertaine Vandyke, an October 2024-born bull from Upperlands, Co Derry. This intermediate bull by Glenrock Redemption is bred from the Ampertaine Elgin-sired Ampertaine Sweet and sold to Willie Barron, Burnhope, Co Durham.

The Anside team of Stephen and Denise Irvine, son, Martin, and his wife, Mel, Braehead, Drummuir, Keith, saw their Anside Vermont, sell for 25,000gns to Thomas and Debbie Hutton, Threlkeld, Keswick. This 18-month-old by Ampertaine Majestic, which has sired bulls to 35,000gns is out of Procters Rdiamante which was purchased as a yearling for 16,000gns.

Just behind at 24,000gns was Loosebeare View, a two-year-old from Mark and Andrew Quick, Loosebeare, Crediton, Devon. Sired by Quickeeze Spike and out of Loosebeare Pimp, this first-prize bull was purchased by Peter Edmondson and Jason Loan, Seathwaite, Keswick.

The Quicks also sold their first-prize Loosebeare Voop for 18,000gns, to John Clark, Contin, Strathpeffer. This June 2024-born bull is by Barrons Major, which has sired bulls to 35,000gns, and bred from Loosebeare Lila.

Also selling at 24,000gns was the class winner, Woodmarsh Vivaldi, from Mike and Katherine Gould, Grange, Shrewsbury. The October 2024-born bull is by the 50,000gns Wilodge Cerberus, a former champion winner here, and out of Woodmarsh Ravenelle, whose dam is a full sister to Wilodge Vantastic. He was knocked down in a joint purchase to Messrs Wood, Dutton, Preston, and Messrs Priestley, Brampton.

Two other bulls sold for 18,000gns each, including Norman Valley from Eric and Elaine Norman and sons, Craig and Michael, Little Orton, Carlisle. The two-year-old, sired by Frogmore Ronaldo and out of Norman Rena, joins the Studholme family from Nealhouse, Carlisle.

The other at 18,000gns was another Ampertaine Majestic son – the junior male champion, Eniver Volvo – from Irish breeder, Michael McKeefry, Coleraine. The 18-month-old, out of Eniver Redsea, went home with the Jones family, Llanarth, Dyfed.

Lukeroyal Valuabull from Mel and Diane Lucas, Seven Mile Straight, Antrim, makes the long journey to Orkney after selling for 17,000gns to Balfour Baillie, Tankerness. The October 2024-born bull is by the 35,000gns Lukeroyal Robin, and bred from Lukeroyal Rose.

At the same money was Poole Ace, a son of the 40,000gns Ampertaine Opportunity, from Tom Hilsdon, Poole, Knowestone, South Molton. This 15-month-old, bred from Poole Tiffany, carries two copies of the F94L gene and sold to Thomas Illingworth, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie.

Walter Cruikshank, Clury, Dulnain Bridge, Inverness, sold Clury Vangerwan for 16,000gns to Edward McNeill’s Shennanton Livestock at Kirkcowan, Newton Stewart. The October 2024-born bull is a son of Huntershall Seth and the fourth calf from Clury Olga, a dam sired by Larry, an imported French bull.

Garrowby Vagabond, brought out by Clive Rowland for Garrowby Farm Estate, Bugthorpe, York, was knocked down at 15,000gns to Rodney Brothers Plant Hire, Ripon, North Yorkshire. The 19-month-old is a son of the 32,000gns Blaencwm Sam, and bred from Garrowby Saigon, a Gunnerfleet Hicks daughter.

Andrew and Kathryn Gammie, Drumforber, Laurencekirk, held a major reduction of their Westpit herd the previous evening selling 16 cows and heifers with calves at foot, all sired by Foxhillfarm Terminator, and five in-calf females.

Leading the way at 8500gns was the eight-year-old cow Wilodge Option, a daughter of Ampertaine Elgin bred from Milbrook Gingerspice. Option, which is a full sister to the 250,000gns Wilodge Poshspice, sold with her five-week-old bull calf, Buffan, at foot, to Aberdeenshire breeders Frank and Marion Miller and son Allan, Midmar, Inverurie.

Just behind at 8200gns was the three-year-old Westpit Una, sired by Huntershall Odyssey and out of Westpit Redruby. She sold with her two-month-old heifer calf, Betty, to the Bowker family, Balderstone.

Carrickaldreen Superjen, sired by Rocky, a bull which has produced several progeny at five-figure sums, made 7800gns to the Edgar family, from Dalbeattie. This five-year-old cow, out of Sarkley Follyjen, was joined by her three-week-old bull calf, Boris.

The collective sale of females peaked at 5000gns for John and Denise Eve’s Eves Vashti, from Stubbsgill, Aspatria. This two-year-old heifer by Foxhill Lordofthering, sold to Messrs Richardson, Aspatria.

Averages: Bulls – 32 seniors, £10,877.34 (-£216.14 for nine more sold); 27 intermediates, £11,403 (+£1400 for the same number); 27 juniors, £9263.33 (+£1431.69 for the same number).
