DUMFRIES

C&D Auction Marts sold lambs to average of 338.1p per kg with a top of £196 and 516p paid for Beltex from Messrs Craig, Glenhowan. Cast ewes reached £210 for Suffolks from Messrs Sloan, Backburn.

The reintroduction of the mart's young handlers competition for children aged one-15 years was judged by Carolyn Hastings of Kopje who found her champion in Lachlan Rae, Wallacetown. His lamb sold for £195 to MJ Stark, Paisley. The reserve champion, Evie Craig, Glenhowan, sold her lamb for £196, to J Monk, Lancaster.

WOOLER

Harrison and Hetherington sold 847 lambs and 368 cast sheep. Lambs sold to £202 for Texels from Messrs Moor, Nesbit Farmhouse and to 361.70p for Suffolks from Messrs Morgan, Sunnyside. Cast sheep reached £288 for Texels from Messrs Carmichael, North Wing. 


PENRITH

Penrith & District Farmers sold 1820 lambs, 87 hoggs, 325 lightweight collections of hoggs and lambs, and 2718 cast ewes and rams. Lambs averaged 345p and £160, with top prices of £246 for 75kg Suffolk lambs and 407p per kg for 44kg Beltex, both of which were consigned by R Hall and Son, Inglewood Edge. Cast ewes sold to £330 for Texels from M McNally, Northern Ireland, while rams sold to £248 for a Charollais from HM McRae, Shethin.


COCKERMOUTH

A Limousin bull from Messrs Dick, Mains of Throsk, topped Mitchells Auctions' sale selling at £3526 or to 430p for another of the same from Messrs Taylor and Gill.

Heifers peaked at £3123.60 for a Limousin from T Skelton, Low House, or to 448p for a British Blue from J Dixon and Sons, Lesson Hall, who also topped the bullocks at 422p with a Limousin. Top price amongst the bullocks was £3119.16 for a British Blue from NE Dyson, Gebdykes. Cast cows sold to 340p for a Limousin from Ian Knight, Stephney and to £2729.68 for another of the same from Rob Purdham, Low Boonwood.

Ewes sold to £350 from S and E Wigham, Park Burnfoot. Lambs peaked at £260 for a Texel from J Forster, East Wharmley, or to 550p for a Beltex from K and I Sparke, Little Swinburne.


STIRLING (UA)

United Auctions sold 2723 lambs, 175 hoggs and 2682 ewes and rams. Lambs averaged 333.04p, peaking at £194 for Suffolks from South Flanders and 412p for Beltex from Easterton. Hoggs averaged 221.81p and reached £155 for Texels from Clunebeg and 271p for more of the same from Clochkan. Texel ewes from North Balloch topped the cast trade at £280.00, with rams reaching £200 for a Suffolk from Claysyke.


STIRLING (CALLY)

Caledonian Marts heifers to average 376p, selling to 410p for a Simmental from Ross Brothers, Wardhead and for a British Blue from JH and NT Turnbull, Meadowend. A top price of £2706 was paid for a Limousin from Skeoch Farms, Stirling. Bullocks averaged 345p, peaking at 375p for a Limousin from Meadowend and for another of the same from J and Rearie, Riggs. A Charolais from Wardhead topped the prices per head at £2880. Young bulls peaked at 362p and £2519 for a Limousin from A Kennedy, Seggarsdean. OTM cattle averaged 250p, selling to 348p for a Shorthorn from Ross Brothers, Wardhead and to £2800 for a Limousin from W and M Wylie, Broompark. Dairy cows reached 287p for a Friesian from Balgreggan Farms, Stranraer and £2260 for a Friesian from T Greer, Wharlawhill.

On Tuesday, prime lambs averaged 314p, selling to 381p for a Texel from PG Perring, Hoprig and for a Texel from E Robertson, Skeoch, and to £180 for a 62kg Texel from AP Johnston, Blindburn. Cast ewes reached £250 for a Texel from Hoprig, while tups sold to £187 for Cheviots from S Agnew, Wester Culmore.


THAINSTONE

Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 174 cows and bulls to average £2138.30 or 287p per kg. Finished beef cows averaged £2399.03 and sold to £3290 for a 992kg Charolais cross from Mosside with feeding types levelling at £1920 having sold to £3190 for a 794kg Limousin from Upper Drakemyres, Keith. Boning cows averaged £1298.33 and sold to £1390 for a 682kg Luing cross. Dairy cows averaged £1870 and sold to £2070 for a 712kg Fleckvieh. Bullocks sold to 411p for a 610kg Limousin from Chapel of Barras, Stonehaven and £2823.15 for an 885kg Charolais cross from Blackpots, Auchnagatt. Heifers reached 407p for a 550kg Limousin cross from Whiteside, Tullynessie and £2579.20 for a 640kg Limousin cross from Stoneyhill, Keith Hall. Young bulls topped at 359p for a 690kg Limousin from Shannas, Clola and £3306.45 for a 1005kg Charolais from Middle Drimmie, Rattray.

Lambs levelled at 323p, selling to 379.5p for 44kg Beltex from Shougle, Birnie and £196 for 52kg Texels from Muir Farm, Alford. Feeding sheep averaged £138.89, selling to £325 for Texels from Nistaben, Dounby.


DARLINGTON

Darlington Farmers Auction sold 51 bulls to average 360p and £2566, peaking at 413p for a 627kg Limousin from S and J Dent and Son, Great Burdon and to £4140 for a Limousin from AC Simpson and Son, McNeil Farm. Heifers averaged 405p and £2488 whilst steers levelled at 354p and £2546. A top of 454p was paid for a 548kg Limousin heifer from W Miller, High Aketon, and £2979 from JG Moss, who also topped the steers at 429p with a 647kg British Blue, while a 833kg Limousin from Messrs Fettes made £3065.

Lambs averaged 324p and £147.97, selling to 440p or £220 for a 50kg Beltex lamb from DR Smith, East Roughlea. Cast sheep reached £237 for a continental ewe from R Lawson and Son, Home Farm.


HAWES

Hawes Farmers Auction Marts sold lambs to average 308p, with a top of £196 paid for 58kg Texels from Libby Winspear, or 375p for more of the same from R and LA Capstick. Ewes reached £228 for a Texel from DA and MA Brown and Son, Coverdale and EM Winspear, Hawes.


ST BOSWELLS

Harrison & Hetherington sold 76 clean cattle, 50 cast cows, 1595 lambs and 693 cast sheep. Bullocks averaged 383p and sold to 418p for a Limousin from Messrs Dandie, Learielaw and to £3308 for a Charolais from Messrs Clark, Wellheads. Heifers averaged 385p and sold to 436p for a Limousin from Messrs Hamilton, Bee Edge and to £2662 for another of the same from Messrs Dixon, Whitsome West Newton. A Charolais from Messrs Sinclair, Crookston topped the bulls at £2640 or 352p.

Cast cows averaged 284p and sold to 339p twice for Limousins from Messrs Common, Butchercote, and to £3272 for an Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Elliot, Roxburgh Mains.

Lambs averaged 324p having sold to £227 for Texels from Highfield Farming and 434p for Beltex from Messrs McGowan, Craiglea. The sale included a show and sale of Texel and Texel cross lambs which saw the championship awarded to Messrs Fullerton, Corsbie with the reserve presented to Messrs McGowan, Craiglea.

LEADING awards

Ex-Suff ewes – 1 and champion, Corsbie, 51½kg, £200; 2, Dryden, 43kg, £136. Cont – 1 and reserve champion, Whitsome West Newton, 52kgs, £188. Any other breed – 1, Dryden, 43½kgs, £140.

Cast ewes averaged £163.97 and sold to £298 for a Bluefaced Leicester from Messrs Sharp, Newbigging Walls with a Texel from Messrs Green, The Craggs, topping the tup trade at £300.


LANARK

Lawrie and Symington sold 35 bullocks and heifers, which peaked at £2865 and 430p for a Limousin cross heifer from Brockwoodlees. Bullocks sold to £2736 for another of the same from South Arnloss and to 380p twice, from South Arnloss and East Millrig. Dairy bullocks and heifers realised £2073 and 325p for a Holstein from Holms of Glengavel.Young bulls peaked at £2740 for a Simmental from East Merkland and to 340p from East Merkland and for a Shorthorn from Oldhill. Beef cows sold to £2410 or to 328p for a Charolais from The Law, while dairy types reached £1890 from Greentowers and to 238p from Ormiston Mains.

Some 1692 lambs, including a show and sale of young handlers' prime lambs were topped at £220 for Texels from Strawfrank and to 371p for Beltex from Ingraston Farms. The average was 316p per kg.

Cast ewes were topped at £320 for Texels from Yeldabrek, with rams peaking at £255 for Beltex from Westmains.


CARLISLE

Harrison and Hetherington sold bulls to a top of £3935.36 and 416p for a 946kg Limousin from Messrs Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Stirling. Dairy-bred bulls reached £2070.60 for a 714kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith and 318p for a 581kg Montbeliarde from Seymour Farm, Wigton. Clean cattle sold to £3015.12 and 408p was a 739kg Limousin cross steer from J Wilson, Cassindilly, Fife. Heifers were topped £2828 for a 700kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and to 426p for a 625kg Limousin cross from Halfway Well, Penrith.

Cast cows sold to £3022 for a 1023kg Salers and 343p for an 878kg Limousin with stock bulls to  £4389 and 339p for a 1293kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor.

Lambs averaged 328.2p or £151.56, selling to £221 for a Millennium Bleu from Messrs Abbott, Corrie Field, and to 416p for a Dutch Texel from Park Burnfoot. Cast sheep were topped at £300 for Texels from Messrs Wigham, Park Burnfoot.


AYR

Craig Wilson sold 1505 lambs to average 314p with a top price of £183 paid for Texels from Messrs Young, Castle Mains and from Messrs McCulloch, Knockendon. Beltex from Messrs Meikle, Helentongate topped the prices per kg at 375p. Cast sheep (777) reached £238 for a Suffolk ewe from JM Thomson and Son, Blairbowie

Bullocks averaged 396p and reached 402p for a British Blue cross from North Boig. Heifers averaged 374p and sold to 400p for a Limousin from the same home. Beef cows reached £2650 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from the Wilson family, Low Boydston, while dairy types sold to £2480 from J Stevenson, Drumsuie. Cast bulls peaked at £3000 for an Aberdeen Angus from A Weir, Gateside.


HUNTLY

United Auctions sold lambs to average 310p, peaking at 360p for a 40kg Beltex from Lythebrae, Aberchirder, or £204 for a 79kg Texel from Drumburn, Keith. Ewes reached £262 for a pure Texel from Dell of Inshes, Inverness.


CASTLE DOUGLAS

OTM cattle peaked of £2435.52 at Wallets Marts’ sale for an Angus heifer from Palmallet Farms or 359p for the same from Messrs McKinnel, Garrarie. The 1001 lambs averaged 310.5p, with a top of £160 for Texels from Messrs Marshall, Eastlands, and 349.5p for more of the same from Messrs Milroy, Kirranrae. Cast sheep reached £228 for Suffolk ewes from Messrs Forsyth, Corra.


WIGTON

Hopes Auctioneers saw a 660kg Limousin heifer from J Dixon and Sons, Lesson Hall, top the trade selling at 440p and £3068.12. OTM cattle peaked at 310p for a 683kg British Blue cow from Grahams of Longcummercattiff and to £2337.32 for an 823kg Aberdeen Angus cow from the same home.


HEXHAM

Hexham and Northern Marts sold heifers to 403.5p and £2542.05 for a Limousin cross from WY and RW Ryle Farming. Cast cows sold to 327.5p for a Limousin cross from Little Swinburne and to £2371.60 for another of the same from W Walton and Sons, Troughend.

Lambs peaked at £215 for a Texel cross from G and EA Herdman, Luns House and to 376.6p for the same from JH Emerson, Haggate.


Kirkby Stephen

An entry of 1616 sheep forward at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale achieved an average 360.12p.

The sale was topped at £220 for both a pen of Beltex cross lambs from Georgia and Charlotte Davies, Top Field Farm, Leicester and for a Texel cross from Messrs Buckle, Bleathgill, Barras.

Price per kg realised 540p for a pen of 40kg Beltex crosses from Messrs Dodd, Temple Sowerby.

Cast ewes sold to £222 for Texel crosses from Messrs Pickard, Leicester.
