ALL classes of store cattle were keenly bid for despite a mixed show in terms of quality at Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 445.

They sold to £1345 for a pair of Limousin bullocks from G Baty, High Knells, Carlisle, who sold 55 bullocks to level at £1092. Heifers hit £1315 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Bowman, Scale Houses, Penrith.

A small show of 188 weaned cattle met a steady trade to top at £1020 for a pair of 12-month-old Limousin bulls from Messrs Norman, Little Orton.

Dingwall

A REASONABLE show of store cattle met a satisfactory trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts where plainer types were more hesitant.

Limousins led throughout as heifers (48) reached 242.7p and £1160 for a 478kg pen from Ballone, Abriachan, while bullocks (32) hit 215.1p and £1000 for a 465kg pen from Fanbalir, Kiltarlity.

Also on offer was a selection of breeding cows were a British Blue cow with Limousin-sired heifer calf at foot from Cranford, Gollandfield, topped at £2300, with the same home leading the cow and male calf trade at £1850 for a Simmental with Limousin-sired calf outfit.

In-calf cows reached £950 for a Simmental cross from 2 Vatten, Dunvegan.

Prime and feeding cows (53) levelled at 126.9p having sold to 154.9p for a Salers cross from Fortnighty, Lethen, as well as £1270 for a British Blue cross from Achardale, Halkirk.

Four cast bulls hit 119.5p for a Charolais cross from Greenvale, Dunnet, and £970 for a Limousin cross from Peingown, Kilmuir.

HELD alongside Harrison and Hetherington's sale of breeding sheep, last week, was a sale of store lambs which met a cracking trade to peak at £84 for a pen of Beltex from LM and C Whittaker, Kirkby in Furness.

SELLING through United Auctions, last week, were 924 store cattle where the 599 bullocks levelled at 216.79p with 62 dairy-bred bullocks at 145.28p and 263 heifers at 206.27p.

A Simmental cross bullock weighing 312kg from Greenhill topped the entry at 253.2p per kg with bullocks also selling to £1280 for a 566kg Charolais cross from Midlock, while dairy bullocks reached 162p and £980 for a 605kg Holstein cross from Bandirran.

It was a 712kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Easter Langhill that topped the gross trade at £1460 as heifers also reached 245.8p for a 476kg Limousin cross from Oakersdyke.

Of the 126 cast cows on offer, the 110 beef-bred cows averaged 125.85p and sold to 205.5p for a Limousin cross from Drumoider as well as £1350 for a Charolais cross from Carwood.

Averaging 113.15p, the 16 dairy cows peaked at 148.8p for a Holstein cross off Kaimhill and £895 for a Friesian cross from East Bangour.

ON Monday, the company sold 9655 sheep where the entry of store lambs peaked at £73.59 for Texels from Cloquhat, follwoed closely at £73 for Cheviots from Craigannet.

Breed averages were mixed as Cheviots recorded the biggest increase on the week of £6.87 to level at £57.71, with Texel crosses up by 31p to average £63.67. Beltex crosses set the best average of £63.97 (-£2.36), with Suffolk crosses at £60.68 (-£3.60), Mules at £52.69 (-£6.35) and Blackfaces at £41.64 (-85p).

TRADE was firm thanks to a large ringside of buyers at Craig Wilson's sale of 872 store cattle, where 480 bullocks levelled at 211.89p per kg or £937.92 with 37 dairy bullocks at 142.3p or £730.14 and 355 heifers at 205.47p or £923.06.

Leading the gross trade at £1405 was a trio of Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Logan, Altgolath (Arran), with the same home leading the heifer gross trade at £1245 for a pair of Angus crosses.

Bullocks also reached 244.7p for a pen of six Limousins from Gass (Straiton) while the same breed led the heifers at 230.6p for a pen from Barneil (Kirkmichael).

Dairy bullocks hit £835 and 154.3p for a pen of nine from Outerwood.

Also forward were 913 store lambs where long-keep lambs were easy to clear but strong lambs were harder to cash. The sale peaked at £70 for a pen of Texels from Messrs McDonald, Auchenhew (Arran).

LAMBS met a good demand for the strongest sorts at Dingwall and Highland Marts' two-day sale of store lambs, last week, where 8837 Cheviots cashed in on the first day to average £43.72, a drop of £1.13 on the year due to weaker sections proving more difficult to cash.

The Cheviot entry peaked at £130 for a pen of ram lambs form Burnbank, Isle of Canna.

On day two, a strong show of Suffolk and continental cross lambs met a firm demand as the sale peaked at £78.50 for Texel crosses from Upper Gartally, Drumnadrochit, as the 1533 Texel crosses set the best of the averages at £57.86.

Next best at £76 were Beltex crosses from Peallaig, Dingwall, which also led the Suffolk crosses at £71. The 845 Beltex crosses averaged £57.16 with 929 Suffolk crosses at £54.07.

Cheviot wedder lambs (1392) hit £74 from Upperton, Balnain, and averaged £39.76 while Cheviot ewe lambs (261) levelled at £38 and sold to £65 from Achnaclerach, Garve.

Cross lambs (661) averaged £43.53 and sold to £69 from Inkstack Farm, Thurso, while 166 Blackfaces cashed in at £25.33, having peaking at £46.50 from Fanblair, Kiltarlity.

Also on offer were 761 sheep from Lewis Livestock Producers which peaked at £53 for crosses from 11 Breasclete, Isle of Lewis, as the 148 crosses averaged £31.25. Texel crosses (12) set the best average of £39.54 having hit £48 from 6 Timsgarry, Lewis, while 58 Cheviots averaged £32.68 and sold to £47 from 37 Garloway, Lewis.

Blackface lambs (543) averaged £23.90 and reached £39.50 from 16 Uigen, Uig.

QUALITY store cattle continued to sell well at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 592 stores, where a 392kg Charolais bullock from Ternemny, Knock, topped at 260.2p per kg.

Bullocks (268) averaged 215.5p and also topped the gross trade at £1440 for a pen of four Simmentals weighing 632kg from Barnyards, Mintlaw.

Heifers (315) levelled at 199.2p and were led by Simmentals at 236.2p for a pen of five weighing 326kg from Auchtertyre Farms, Pluscarden, and £1255 for one at 646kg from Grandview, Heughhead.

Store lambs met a strong demand with longer keep sorts showing an improvement at the firm's sale of 6210 sheep.

A large entry of lambs saw 593 Mule ewe lambs top at £130 for a pen of 32 from Newton of Hassiewells, Rothienorman, with 227 ewe lambs to £108 for a pair of Beltex from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen.

Of the store lambs, it was a pair of Texels from 13 Baleshare, North Uist, that topped to lead the 2509 sheep from the islands, while the 1747 mainland store lambs sold to £71 for a pair of Suffolks from Upper Sauchen, Ordhead.

Breeding Sheep (96) sold to £110 for a pen of correct Suffolks from South Litterty, Turriff.

Feeding ewes and rams (1038) hit £135 three times for Texels – for ewes from both Newton of Carnousie, Forglen, and Tillyboy, Echt, as well as for rams from Netherton, Whitehouse.

ALL classes of store and feeding sheep met an animated trade with best quality sorts keenly sought after at Lawrie and Symington, last week.

The 2031 store lambs peaked at £74 for Cheviot Mules from Messrs Clarkson, Woodlands, followed at £73 for Texels from Messrs Semple, Barmullock, Campbeltown, whose run of 440 lambs averaged £60.60.

The 1470 cast and feeding ewes topped at £134 for Texels form Hillfield.

Castle Douglas

SHORT-KEEP lambs were few and far between with mid to long-keep sorts making up the majority of the 924 store lambs on offer at Wallets Marts at the weekend.

All classes were keenly bid for as the sale was topped at £65.50 by two lots of Texels, firstly from Glenlee Farms, New Galloway, and again from Messrs Henderson, Stewarton, Moniaive.

On Monday, the company sold 185 store and OTM cattle where best quality stores were the easiest sold as the sale peaked at £1170 and 230.3p per kg for a pen of three Limousin heifers from T Robb, Trolane, Dalry, who also topped the gross bullock trade at £1145 with a pair of Limmies.

Bullocks also sold to 226.3p for Limousins from Cardoness and Kings Laggan and averaged 206.4p while heifers levelled at 200.3p.

OTM cattle met a buoyant demand to average 119.9p and top at 140p for a Limousin cross from Lower Ardmannoch, Knockvennie.

MOST sellers received around £5 per head more compared to last year's store lamb rates at United Auctions' second sale of the year, despite lambs being around 1.8kg lighter.

Of the 1888 sheep on offer, lambs averaged £55.80 and sold to £75 for Suffolk crosses from Lossit with more of the same from Ardnave making184p per kg.

A GOOD show of lambs saw the strongest sorts continue to sell very easily while smaller lambs were the most difficult to sell at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 2795 store and prime lambs on Monday.

Ewes lambs (186) met the best of the trade as they peaked at £145 for Cheviots from Lynton Cottage, Ulbster, and averaged £57.36.

Store lambs (1837) levelled at £58.88 having sold to £77.50 for Texels from Cruithnii, Tofts, a price matched by Cheviot wedders from 8 Upper Dounreay as the 352 Cheviot wedders averaged £49.69.

Prime lambs (420) sold to 174.4p per kg for Beltex weighing 41kg from Thirdpart, Watten, as well as £81.50 for 56kg Suffolks from 5 West Murkle, Thurso.

A GOOD offering of mostly strong store cattle were easily sold at Darlington Farmers' Auction Mart, on Monday, where heifers (100) led the trade when an 18-month-old Limousin from S and J Dent and Son, Great Burdon, Darlington, topped at £1260.

Bullocks (74) sold to £1190 for a pair of Limousin crosses from R and W Todd, High Toft Hill.

Short-keep types and shapely small lambs were well sought after as the sale of 1640 store lambs sold to £86 twice – for Texels from J and JA Wilkinson, Walesmoor, Bishop Auckland, and again for Blue Texels from M Lindley, Willow Dene, Thorpe Thewles.

Longtown

BUYERS were keen for lambs at C and D Auction Marts' sale of 6298 store lambs and feeding ewes on Tuesday, where a quality show met a strong demand to peak at £78 for Texels from Heathfield.

The opening sale of Cheviot and Blackface lambs welcomed a mixed show but gound all strong lambs in great demands. Cheviots reached £56 from Effgill with Blackies to £53 from Craigieburn.

Also forward were 124 store cattle where bullocks hit £1185 for British Blues from Devonport Farms with heifers to £1060 for Limousins from Hazelgill.
