Carlisle
A PLAINER show of 565 store cattle met a strong trade at Harrison and Hetherington's sale, last week, where a top of £1365 was paid for a British Blue bullock from I and L Beaty, Durdar, Carlisle. 
Heifers sold to £1335 for a Limousin cross from JS and J Whitfield, Orton Rigg, Carlisle. 
The 279 weaned cattle hit £1085 for a Charolais bull from Messrs Gardhouse, Aitkon House, Wigton, with bullocks to £855 for Charolais from Cooper House and heifers to £850 from Whiteside.

Thainstone
A PEN of Mule ewe lambs from Mains of Glenbuchat, Strathdon, headed up Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of store, breeding and feeding sheep when they topped the 388 ewe lambs on offer. 
The 431-strong entry of breeding sheep sold to £108 for two-year-old Beltex ewes from Craighill, Strichen. 
Store lambs (1860) reached £79.50 for Suffolks from Auchmar, Leslie, with the 1482 lambs from the islands selling to £66.50 for Texels form Fairyknowe, Bigton. 
Fairyknowe also led the 61 island sheep at £60 with Texel cross ewes, a price matched by Cheviot cross ewes from Findlins, Hillswick.
Feeding ewes and rams (613) sold to £132 for Texels from Easthouse, Holm.

Dingwall
A GOOD entry of Aberdeen-Angus and Shorthorn-sired cattle met a firm enquiry at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ annual show and sale of native and continental cattle. 
Claiming the Aberdeen-Angus championship, as judged by J McKay, Fletcherfield, Kirriemuir, was a 560kg bullock from M Munro, Balaldie, Fearn, which went on to sell for £1360 to top the gross trade. 
In reserve and leading the price per kg at 253.8p when selling for £1180 was a 465kg bullock from R Sanderson, Smerral, Bower. 
Two cattle from P and A Harrison, Balliefurth, Grantown on Spey, headed up the Shorthorn classes. Champion was a 545kg bullock which sold for £1210 and in reserve was a 550kg heifer which made £1100.
Angus bullocks (349) achieved the best average of 220.1p while 158 Angus heifers levelled at 200.3p and sold to 232.8p for a 335kg cross from Gaskbeg, Laggan, and £1270 for a pen of 584kg crosses from Balintraid, Delny.
Balintraid also topped the 66 other native heifers when Shorthorn crosses sold to 225.7p for a 452kg pair and £1200 for a 560kg heifer. They averaged 181.1p while the 93 native bullocks averaged 201.5p and also sold to 249.4p for a pen of 385kg Shorthorn crosses from Clatequoy, Thurso.
Of the continental-sired cattle it was a 325kg Limousin cross bullock from Trien Croft, Carbost, that topped at 243.1p with the same home selling a 455kg Limousin cross heifer for £950. 
Per head, a 545kg Simmental cross bullock from Barns of Hempriggs, Wick, hit £1210 as heifers also sold to 223.9p for a pen of 402kg Wagyu crosses from Knockdee, Halkirk. 
Continental bullocks (41) averaged 208p while continental heifers (18) averaged 209.4p.
Also on offer were 38 OTM cattle which saw 35 cows average 119.8p and sell to 190.3p and £1370 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Balintraid.

Longtown
DESPITE quality not being up to the usual standard, all classes were sharper on the week due to extra buyers operating at C and D Auction Marts’ sale of 5890 store lambs and feeding ewes, which sold to £74.50 for Texels from High Aikton. 
Included was a show of Cheviot lambs where the entry of 2893 was considered to be one of the best quality for several years when the sale averaged £53.67.
Judge Edward Eastham, of Longburgh Fauld, Burgh by Sands, awarded the top ticket to a pen from Messrs Bradbury, Satchells, which later topped the sale at £68.50. 
On Tuesday, the firm had forward 6054 store lambs and feeding ewes at their weekly sale. 
A better show of lambs saw averages up £2 to £3 on the week, selling to £77 for Texels from Longformacus Farms and Pilmuir, with others to £75 Crindledykes, £72 Cumstone. 
Beltex sold to £75.50 from Lingeyfield with Suffolks to £70.50 from Satchells; Charollais to £73 from Pilmuir; Greyfaces to £70 from Crindledykes and North Country Cheviots sold to £65.50 from East Murton.
The entry of 1569 Hill Cheviots met a flying trade with prices also up £2 to £3 on the week. 
Top price was £57 from Glendinning and Upper Hindhope with others selling to £56.50from Toftholm, £55.50 Carlenrigg, £54.50 Easter Alemoor.
Blackface lambs forward for the show and sale of 1743 head judged by Andrew Reid, Glendearg, Eskdalemuir, saw the champion ticket presented to a pen from Messrs Robson, Townshields, Haydon Bridge which later sold for £58. 
The second prize pen from Mrs L Luescher, Sundhope, made £53 with the third prize winners from Neil Manning, Earlshaugh, making £54.50. Others sold to £58 from Lamperts, £57 from Haliburton and £56.50 from Allensgreen.

Stirling (UA)
MORE than 1600 head of store cattle and 195 cast cows and forward cattle, were offered at last week’s United Auctions’ sale at Stirling which included a prize show and sale for the Duke of Montrose trophy, won by Glenpark Farms.
Their 566kg entry later sold for £1270. 
The first prize bullock, from Messrs Wilson, Whitehill, realised £1030, having scaled 429kg, with the equivalent amongst the heifers, from Herries Farms, weighing 415kg and selling at £970.
By the end of the day, 901 bullocks sold to 245.30p per kg for a 424kg Limousin cross from Nether Dalkeith and £1330 for a 593kg Charolais cross from Glenpark, to average 208.20p.
Black and white bullocks cashed in at 127.60p, having sold to 162.7p for a 332kg Ayrshire cross from Kirkland and £780 for a 574kg for a British Friesian from Berryhill.
A 326kg British Blue cross from High Mindovan, topped the entry of 659 heifers at 262.30p, while a 698kg Charolais cross from Townfoot led the gross trade at £1420. Heifers averaged 199.75p.
Limousin crosses topped the entry of 172 beef cows which averaged 119.15p, with an entry from Ballikinrain selling at 191.20p, and another from Whitrighill at £1550. 
Dairy cows (14) levelled at 91.03p having sold to 140.40p for a Holstein Friesian cross from Overton and £945 for a British Friesian cross from East Bangour. 
On Monday, the firm saw an entry of 5518 store lambs and feeding sheep, well with mostly improved averages on the week. 
Beltex cross lambs averaged £68.06 (+3.41); Mules at £51.60 (-5.33); Suffolk crosses at £60.40  (+1.54); Texel crosses at £59.42 (+1.48) and Blackfaces levelled at £42.36  (+1.74).

SOME 749 store cattle were forward at Craig Wilson’s sale where 368 bullocks averaged 203.6p or £898.78; 116 Friesian bullocks at 139.8p or £677.50 and 265 heifers cashed in at 193.9p or £845.47.
Top price was £1340 paid a British Blue bullock from Turnerhill or 236.8p for a pen of Limousin bullocks from Back O’Hill.
Heifers peaked at £1255 for a Charolais from Carbieston Byres and 227.6p for a Limousin from St Murray.
Friesian Bullocks to £1000 off Barward or 162.6p for the same pen.

AN active ringside ensure all classes tended to be sharper on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts sale of 1313 store cattle, young and weaned calves, young bulls and Aberdeen-Angus and native breed-sired store cattle.
At the annual Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society sponsored show and sale, judged by John Paterson, Garrionhaugh, Wishaw, the overall champion was a 17-month-old 546kg bullock from A and A Foubister, Netherton, Holm, which sold for £1340 of 245.4p per kg to D and V Buchan, Savoch, Longside.
The reserve from H and M Thomson, Heathercow, was a 17-month-old 462kg bullock, purchased by the judge for £1210 or 261.9p per kg. 
The 437 Angus bullocks averaged 216.1p having sold to 261.9p per kg for a 462kg from H and M Thomson, Heathercow, Eday and £1440 for a 640kg from A and A Foubister, Netherton, Holm.
Angus heifers (176) levelled at 199.4p having sold to 215.1p for a pen of five 502kg from M H and J D Walker, Easter Galcantray, Cawdor and £1220 for a 622kg from D Scott, Cadbollmount, Fearn and a 582kg from G Booth and Sons, Greenhill, Tullynessle.

Heifers (205) averaged 210.6p having hit a top of 243.4p per kg for a pen of four 304kg Simmental crosses from J Simpson, Tullyglens, Dunphail and £1260 for a 654kg Aberdeen Angus cross heifer from W and J Chessor, Strathend, Hatton.
The firm’s sale of 2277 Shetland cross Lambs and breeding sheep, staged the same day saw Texels from Wester Brough, Baliasta top the store lambs at £69 while Texel ewes from Virse, Haroldswick, let the Island sheep at £92.

Lochmaddy
SOME 3167 store sheep of all classes sold through Dingwall and Highland Marts’ at Lochmaddy, this week, where trade peaked at £280 for a Texel ram from Corunno, Claddach Baleshare.
Lambs (2134) sold to £71 per head for a pen of Cheviots from Borve View, Liniclate, with the 613 ewes selling to a top price of £89 for a Texel cross from 8 West Gerinish, Lochboisdale. 
The entry of 71 saw prices peak at £92 for a pen of Cheviots from 2 Claddach Illeray, Locheport.
A strong section of  344 feeding sheep was led by a Texel cross wedder from 17A Liniclate, from the Isle of Benbecula.
