It was the Suffolk champion that headed up the 276-strong ram sale at Aberdeen and Northern Marts when a ram lamb from George and Melvin Stuart, Milltown of Birness, Ellon, sold for £750.

The father and son duo also secured the Texel title with a shearling which sold for £650.

The reserve Texel, a lamb from WA Adams and Sons, 11 Raemoir Road, Banchory, realised £720 while the reserve Suffolk, a shearling from Bill Blackhall, Bogfon, Maryculter, made £650.

The 1121 breeding females sold to £132 for Cheviot Mule gimmers from Newton of Crathie, Ballater, while 106 ewe lambs hit £98 for Mules from Newton of Hassiewells, Rothienorman.

Store lambs (1339) sold to £71 for Suffolks from Midtown, Strachan, with island lambs (396) to £75 for Beltex from Strathore, Shapinsay. The 195 island sheep reached £70 for Shetland Cheviots from Kirkhoull, Cullivoe.

Suffolks from Cairnton, Techmuiry, led the 1072 feeding sheep at £99.50.

FEWER rams were forward at United Auctions' sale of breeding rams at Oban where the 196 that changed hands saw quality sorts well bid for while plainer sorts were harder to cash.

A Cheviot shearling from Attonburn led the entry at £780 while lamb rams reached £500 for a Bluefaced Leicester from Drimsynie.

Longtown

A TEXEL shearling from Alistair Bell, Kirkton, Hawick, topped C and D Auction Mart's annual Ram Fair when it sold to Messrs Dean, Kirk House, Brampton, for £2000,

Mr Bell sold another to Messrs Halliday, Crawthat, Lockerbie, for £1200.

Texel ram lambs hit £680 for the champion – as picked out by David Douglas, Catslackburn – from John Tough, Easterseat, selling to Neil Hamilton, Earlside.

A smaller show of 105 Suffolk rams sold to an animated trade with many buyers being volume purchasers taking 10-15 rams each. Shearlings topped at £800 twice for rams from Messrs Rutherford, Guards and lambs to £500 twice from The Land and for the reserve champion from Burgh Head.

The annual sale of Bluefaced Leicesters peaked at £750 for a shearling from WC Anderson and Son, Parkhill, Roberton.

Cross-bred and other continental rams sold well for big shapey sorts with good skins, where the second prize cross-bred shearling from Roderick Runciman, Allanshaws, a Texel cross Suffolk, topped at £600.

ON Monday, Harrison and Hetherington sold 168 breeding rams where a Texel shearling from S and M Pickworth, Dotland Park, Hexham, topped at £420.

The sale of breeding females sold to £122 for a pen of Texel ewes from Messrs Hayton, Fell House, Penrith, while the dispersal from Messrs Rope, c/o Thomsen Estates, Cleator Moor, peaked at £120 for a pen of Texel gimmers.

A smaller entry of 941 store lambs was on offer due the the poor weather over the weekend. Tops here at £80 was a pen of Beltex from Messrs Spruce, The Barns, Forrest Head.
