At Wigton 98 store lambs were sold to a top of £88 twice from Messrs Knight, Stephney, and Messrs Little, Penrith. There were also 72 calves and stirks forward, with fresh calves selling to £300 for British Blue bulls from Messrs Harrington, Birds Hill. Limousin heifers sold to £300 for Messrs Eilbeck, Plumbland Farm. Stronger stirks sold to a top of £430 twice for Messrs Harrington, Flatt Bank, and Messrs Osborn, Cow Lane, both with Blue bulls. The sale topped with beef bred stirks from Messrs Hughes, Seaville, selling to £700 for a Limousin cross steer and £670 twice for heifers.

There were 12 dairy cattle forward, producing a top of £1750 from Messrs Salisbury, Beech. Second calvers reached £1700 from Messrs Harrington, Flatt Bank.

Darlington

Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of store and breeding stock as well as cast cows on Monday, when there were 416 cattle and 1092 sheep forward.

Top price for store cattle went to JD and MS Mortimer of Mayland, Woodland, with a 27-month-old Limousin steer which sold for £1160. Leading the heifer trade were WB Rutter and Sons, Greengill, Scargill, with a 21-month-old British Blue, which reached £1090.

Earlier in the day the breeding cattle were in demand as a 25-month-old British Blue heifer in calf to the Salers from K Askwith sold for £1150 and a five-year-old Limousin cow with a heifer calf at foot from F Davison and Sons, Town End, Bishop Middleham, made £1450.

The confidence in the sheep trade remains very high amongst buyers as last week’s flying trade brought out more numbers. Topping the sale were a trio of Texel ewe hoggs from I Spedding of Harelaw Farm, Wolsingham which sold for £112 per head.

The 170 plus cast cattle averaged 114p per kg, selling to a top price of 183p per kg for a 31-month-old Salers heifer from T Marshall, The Meadows, Fawdon.

Top price per head was £1506 paid for a 978kg Blonde cow from P Weightman and Sons, Hallfield, Easington.
