THERE was smaller show of 718 prime and cast sheep forward for Craig Wilson’s sale, last week, as numbers tighten.

The select show of seven spring lambs reached 211p per kg for a pen of Suffolks from Messrs Cannon, Redbrae, or £96 on two separate occasions – for a Suffolk from Redbrae and for Dorsets from High Skeog.

The 637 hoggs averaged 185.6p per kg with trade peaking at 211.8p for a pen of Beltex hoggs from Messrs McCornick, Barquhill, or £95 for another pen from the same home.

Cast sheep (74) sold to £110 for Suffolk ewes from Messrs Cannon, Redbrae.

Dumfries

PRIME cattle met a keen demand at C and D Auction Marts’ sale which saw a top of 224p per kg paid for Limousin cross heifers from Maryholm, Dumfries, and Waterside, Haugh of Urr. Top per head was £1068 paid for a Limousin from Tregallon.

Some 448 prime hoggs saw trade peak at 238p per kg for Beltex from Drumcork and £100 for another from the same home.

Ewes sold to £95.50 for a Texel from Kirkcarswell, with rams to £100.50 for a Texel from Summerfield.

Penrith

PENRITH and District Farmers’ sale of 1433 prime hoggs and 1076 cast ewes and rams, saw quality was in short supply with an SQQ average of 206p.

Top price was 288p per kg paid for a pen of Beltex hoggs from MTP and SD Wills, Fawcett Park, totalling £115 per head.

Cast ewes and rams met an extreme trade with an overall average of £86.65 achieved and a top of £164 paid for a Texel ewe from Holme House.

Some 278 ewes sold for more than £100 per head to average £109.49.

Forfar

AT Forfar, Lawrie and Symington had forward 33 prime cattle and 594 prime sheep and cast ewes.

Bullocks (13) sold to 248p per kg for a 578kg Limousin from Nethermyres, and to £1527.20 for a 664kg Limousin from Gask to average 219p.

Heifers (18) peaked at 256p per kg for a 533kg Limousin from Nethermyres, and to £1461.56 for a 599kg Limousin from Gask to level at 237p.

Some 473 prime hoggs (473) sold to 239.1p per kg and £110 per head for Texels from Newmill of Inshewan.

Beltex ewes from Balbrydie topped the section at £118, while a Leicester from Rose Cottage led the ram sale at £92.

Huntly

United Auctions sold 1960 prime sheep, where new season lambs (7) averaged 219p per kg.

Top price was £105 paid for 48kg Suff from Upper Woodside, Rothiemmay.

Old season lambs (1038) sold to 228p for 36kg Texel from Sealladh Ard, North Uist. Top price per head was £93.50 paid twice for Texels from Nether Blairmaud, Cornhill and Roddentree, Huntly.

Ewes met a firm enquiry throughout and cashed in at comparable rates. Top price was £150 paid for a pen of Beltex from Logie Durno.

Stirling (Cal)

IN Stirling, Caledonian Marts sold some 74 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, 51 OTM cattle and 48 young calves and stirks.

Prime heifers sold to 258p for a Limousin from W Dandie and Son, Learielaw, and to £1513 again for a Limousin from Learielaw.

Bullocks sold to 248p for a Limousin from Learielaw and to £1593 for a Limousin from R and R Braes, Burnshot, Linlithgow.

Young bulls were topped at 208p per kg for a Limousin from M Jack, Carriston, Star of Markinch, and to £1587 from J Burnett, Upper Spittalton, Blairdrummond.

On Tuesday, the same centre sold 1487 spring lambs, prime hoggets plus cast ewes and tups.

The 1293 hoggs forward met the dearest trade this season, averaging out at 214.8p per kg, up 30.4p on the week. The 948 SQQ hoggs averaged 220p.

Top price went to J Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, with a pen of three Beltex at 53kg which sold for £115 each.

Top price per kg went to GL and D Reid, South Park, again for a pen of Beltex cross hoggs at 44kg fetching 251p.

The first of the new season lambs forward (8) sold to £120 or 250p from J Wilson, Balhelvie, Newburgh for Suffolk cross lambs.

Stirling (UA)

SOME 2800 prime sheep sold through United Auctions’ ring last week, where 44 new season lambs sold to average 244.2p and 2067 old season lambs balanced out at 204.6p.

Top of the new season rams at £126 were Suffolks from West Carse, while a pen of Texels from Balgonar led the price per kg section at 279p.

Old season lambs sold to £124 for Beltex from Luckenburn and 276p for the same.

The 689 ewes peaked at £141 for Texels from Victoria, while rams sold to £134 for a Texel from South Dundonald.

Thainstone

ABERDEEN and Northern Marts sold 24 prime bullocks to average 195.2p with a top of 229p per kg paid for a 595kg Limousin from Roselea, Fetternear, and £1420.80 gross for a 640kg Limousin also from Roselea.

Prime heifers (22) averaged 209.5p having sold to 226p per kg and £1389.90 gross for a 615kg Limousin from Hillocks, Whiterashes

Three young bulls levelled at 161.3p and sold to 171p per kg for a 660kg Aberdeen-Angus from Millhouse, Harray.

The firm also sold 2318 prime sheep where 1918 hoggs averaged 196.2p per kg.

Top price was 232.9p per kg paid for 38kg Beltex from West Park, Aberfeldy, and £102 gross for 47kg Continentals from Easter Craigie, Whitecairns. The SQQ average was 208.5p per kg.

Feeding ewes and rams (400) sold to £120 twice for Beltex from North Lurg, Midmar, and Texels from Edgars Glen, New Deer.

Longtown

A smaller show was forward due to Easter at C and D Auction Marts’ Longtown sale where 2464 prime hoggs and 1970 cast ewes and rams were sold.

The hoggs produced an overall average of 207.3p, with an SQQ of 225.3p.

Best quality hoggs sold to a top of 322p for Beltex from Scott T Jefferson, Peartree Cottage, Wigton, and TA Jefferson, Aspatria Hall, Aspatria.

The 1970 cast ewes and rams saw a sharper trade to average £91.04, selling to a top price of £167 for Texel ewes from A Atkinson, Croft House.

Ayr

CRAIG Wilson sold 875 prime hoggs, two spring lambs and 289 cast ewes and tups at their sale where old season lambs were easy sold and met an average of 198p and 209.4p SQQ.

Top prices included £118 paid for a pair of Beltex from M Stevenson, Balcaimie, and 231.3p per kg for a pen of Texels from RM Dale and Son, Lindsayston.

Trade for the 289 cast sheep peaked at £141 for a Texel ewe from Garfield, Sorn.

On Tuesday, some 110 prime and cast cattle were sold where 14 heifers averaged 227.4p or £1243.65 with three steers cashing in at 235p or £1433.25.

Top price was 240p for a Limousin heifer from High Gameshill and a steer from the same home. High Gameshill also topped the steers at £1452.

Orkney

ON Monday, some 10 prime cattle, 154 prime hoggs, 15 store hoggs and 10 cast sheep were sold through Orkney mart.

Prime heifers sold to 217p per kg for a Simmental scaling 555kg from HM Seatter, Melsetter, Longhope.

Hoggs peaked at 186.4p per kg for 44kg Texels from GS and E Montgomery, Midland, Rendall, which realised £82. Top per head was £100 paid for 60kg Texels from T and M Seatter, Hammer, Westray.

Cast sheep sold to £122 for a Texel ram from J Foulis, Upperfield, St Ola.

Dingwall

EIGHT prime bullocks averaged 226.1p at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale on Tuesday.

They sold to a top of 240p for a Charolais cross from Shoreton Farms, Culbokie, and £1408.35 for a 615kg Limousin cross from Ashley, North Kessock.

The 14 heifers averaged 227.7p and reached 239p twice for a 560kg Limousin cross from Ashley and for a 480kg Charolais cross from Easter Sheeppark. Top price per head was £1487.50 paid for a 625kg Limousin cross from Shoreton.

The firm also sold 615 old season lambs to average 214.8p and to 236.4p for a pen of 38.5kg Beltex crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. The SQQ was 218.1p for 542.

Castle Douglas

WALLETS Marts sold 348 prime and cast sheep on Tuesday, along with three spring lambs which sold to £105 and 217.98p for a Dorset for Messrs Maxwell, Midtown, Rhonehouse.

The 263 prime hoggs sold to average 200.36p with an SQQ of 205.54p. Top price was £112 per head for heavy Texels from Messrs March and Lobban, Muncraig, Borgue.

Top per kg was 248.8p for a pen of Beltex from Messrs Adams, Torhousekie, Wigtown.

Some 82 cast sheep sold to £98.50 for Beltex ewes from Torhousekie.
