A ewe hogg from Tom Willoughby, Redmire, secured the top price of £6000 at Hawes Farmers’ Auction Market’s show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester females.

The event which was staged alongside a show and sale of Swaledales and Herdwicks, saw the pre-sale Bluefaced Leicester judge, Marian Porter, Riddings, buy her champion, alongside the Dawyck flock. This ewe hoggs is by the M3 Smearsett and out of L12 Penhill, which goes back to G4 Low Tipalt.

The Wight family, Midlock, Crawford, sold the first prized gimmer for £2200 to TW Atkinson and Son, Gammersgill. Her pedigree features the sire, N24 Marriforth onto a M1 Riddings dam, which was shown successfully at the Royal Highland Show last year, along with her gdam. She is carrying twins to the home-bred L27 Midlock.

The Hewgill pen was once again in the money for the Lord family, who sold their dearest hogg for £2200 to James Middleton, Arncliffe. A daughter of P1 Marriforth she is out of a home-bred ewe by the G39 Hewgill.

Their first hogg, again by the same sire sold for £2000 to Andrew Nicholson, Swineside End.

The first prize ewe came from Robin Booth from the Smearsett flock, which went on to make £2000 when the hammer fell to JC Walker and Son, Dunsop Bridge. This six-year-old ewe is by the Highberries Highlander and out of a ewe by the old V33 Lunesdale tup which has done so well within the flock. She was carrying twins to the R5 Hewgill which they bought out of Hawes last autumn.

The pre-sale champion – selected by judges Michael McMonagle and Aaron Boule, Southern Ireland – was a gimmer from Robbie Hallam, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, which went on to secure the top price of £1600 among the Swaledales, when selling Seth Guy, Hawes.

The Herdwick trade topped at £2200 for a ewe from AD and T Harrison, Holmrook, when the hammer fell to A and M Brennand and Sons, Chapel-le-Dale.
