SRUC student awarded first yearlong ACT bursary

Anna Craig, a third-year agriculture student based at SRUC’s Aberdeen campus, has been awarded the inaugural sponsorship from Agricultural Central Trading (ACT). The award includes a year-long bursary and the opportunity to undertake paid internships with leading agricultural businesses across the UK.

“I was thrilled to have been chosen for this sponsorship programme,” said Anna. “It means I can gain relevant paid experience while studying for my degree. I already feel it has helped my confidence and organisational skills, which will be invaluable for my future career. I’m really looking forward to my placements.”

Through ACT’s industry connections, recipients of the sponsorship have access to internships with respected firms such as GrainCo Ltd and C J Grant and Partners.

SRUC lecturer Sam Keir praised the initiative, stating: “These sorts of initiatives are useful in developing practical and professional skills which are vital to the industry. Anna has really benefited from this placement, which is evident in her professional approach to her studies; it has even inspired her honours project.”

Currently being piloted exclusively in Scotland through SRUC, the ACT bursary scheme is part of a broader effort to tackle financial barriers to higher education. Gary Bruce, feed and supplements manager at ACT, remarked: “After the initial success of the bursary, ACT is now keen to roll out this initiative across the UK.”

The bursary not only eases the financial burden of study but also enhances students’ learning experiences by reducing the need for part-time work and increasing focus on academic and professional development.

Considering these positive outcomes, SRUC is looking to expand employer collaboration further, incorporating apprenticeships, HNC and HND work experience, and the new Work Professional Placement module within its revalidated Agriculture degree programme.
