Origin Soil Nutrition is highlighting the importance of using accurate soil nutrient data to guide the right nutrition choices and ensure effective application.
The key message is simple: choose the nutrition your soil and crop actually need. This may involve adding specific macro or micronutrients to boost fertiliser uptake, or reducing nutrients that are already in surplus. Guillaume Franklin, nutrition agronomist at Origin Soil Nutrition, explains: “The most expensive fertiliser is the wrong fertiliser. With farm budgets under increasing pressure, making the right choice has never been more critical.”
Farmers and growers already understand that correct nutrition is essential for maintaining and improving yield and crop quality. With additional funding from government schemes encouraging soil analysis, it’s now easier than ever for farms to use soil data to guide purchasing decisions.
“Some growers have yet to finalise their nutrition purchases for the season,” says Franklin.
“Now is the perfect time to review whether planned purchases are appropriate and adjust them according to actual soil and crop requirements.”
Origin’s Nutri-Match service helps farmers do exactly that. By using soil test data to tailor nutrition applications, Nutri-Match corrects deficiencies and optimises fertiliser use. In England, holding a valid soil test for each field has been mandatory under the Farming Rules for Water since 2018, while Wales will introduce soil testing requirements through the Soil Health Universal Action from January 2026. Leveraging this data can improve both yield and fertiliser efficiency.
“Our products can address up to 15 different nutrients, matched precisely to soil deficiencies,” says Franklin.
“For example, if potassium levels are above optimal, we may recommend reducing it in favour of other nutrients like molybdenum, which is known to enhance nitrogen use efficiency.”
Micronutrients will also be featured in the popular Micro-Match demonstration, where visitors can see an electrostatically charged micronutrient powder applied to a macro nutrient granule. This mirrors the process used in our blending plant, ensuring micronutrients are spread evenly across the field.
“This method increases the landing sites for micronutrients by up to 50 times. While required in small quantities, micronutrients are just as vital as macronutrients. This approach allows farmers to apply them in ways that traditional options cannot match.”
