A DAIRY business based on Anglesey has gone into administration, it has confirmed

Mona Island Dairy, whose factory is based on Mona Industrial Park, had joint administrators appointed on Friday (June 7).

The factory opened in early 2023, with the aim of producing more than 30,000 tonnes of Welsh and continental cheeses each year.

About £27million was spent on constructing and launching the plant, with a further £10m earmarked for future expansion.

A statement from the business read: “Anthony Collier and Phil Reynolds of FRP Advisory were appointed as joint administrators of Mona Island Dairy Ltd on June 7.

“The joint administrators are currently exploring options of Mona Island Dairy Ltd, and separately will be in contact with all known creditors in due course.

“The affairs, business and property of the company are being managed by Anthony Collier and Phil Reynolds, who were appointed as joint administrators on June 7.

“The joint administrators act as agents of the company and without personal liability.”

Last month, the business confirmed it was seeking a buyer amid facing struggles to "function in its current form".

The company said it was “sad” to have “come up short” in delivering Europe’s “newest and most sustainable cheese factory”.

In response to this news, Rhun ap Iorwerth, Ynys Môn MS, said: “I’m sad to hear about the news that Mona Dairy has been put into administration.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for milk suppliers, many of whom I’ve been in contact with in recent weeks, and I know they feel let down by this whole situation, as do the staff.

“We must now try to get to the bottom of what’s gone wrong here and explore all possible options for reviving and supporting the business.

“I’ve already written to Welsh Government, asking them about how they intend to intervene, but I’m yet to receive a reply.

“I will continue to make enquiries with urgency and provide any updates as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, I encourage anyone affected by this news and needing support to contact my office.”
