Maximising output through the sale of healthy and viable lambs is a key determinant of profitability for every sheep enterprise.
The approach to tupping and through in to early pregnancy is therefore a key period in the lambing calendar.
Grass growth so far this year is similar to last year and will be impacted by the lack of rainfall, with increased dry matter and reduced energy levels. Pasture trace element levels, in particular cobalt, also typically decline over the summer and are often below animal requirements; this has implications for follicle development, ovulation rates, sperm production and quality.
Supplementation in the run-up to tupping will support body condition and nutritional status during a period where grazing quality and quantity is often in decline, helping to optimise ovulation and conception rates.
