When it comes to tackling feed runs, trailer towing and daily jobs across varied terrain, few vehicles earn their place like a double cab pick-up.
From crofts and uplands to large-scale lowland units, the demand for no-nonsense 4x4s remains constant and Isuzu’s D-Max has built a solid reputation as one of the most work-ready options on the market.
Now, Isuzu has sharpened its offering even further with the launch of the limited-edition D-Max V-Cross Steel Edition, a rugged twist on the popular DL40 trim that introduces a bold new look and refined extras into the brand’s proven formula.
The Scottish Farmer took the keys for a test drive, courtesy of Alister Scott at Adam Purves of Galashiels, one of Scotland’s longest-standing Isuzu dealers, serving farmers across the country and the islands since 1879.
Right now, the V-Cross range, along with the rugged Steel Edition, qualifies for a good few finance offers, including 0% finance and exclusive NFUS deals.
Farmers can also breathe a sigh of relief: earlier tax concerns around pick-ups have now been firmly put to rest. Following HMRC’s review of double cab classification, commercial status, and the benefits it brings, remains unchanged. It means vehicles like the D-Max Steel Edition continue to offer business-friendly financial advantages.
With 17.5% of the UK’s pick-up market in Isuzu’s corner, this latest special edition makes a strong case for farmers wanting something dependable, with a bit more presence on the road.
What’s new?
Built on the high-spec DL40, the D-Max Steel Edition gets a few extra touches that give it a bolder, more individual look. Finished in Steel Grey Mica, it’s a colour that works well with the pick-up’s solid design.
Styling upgrades include a wheel arch fender flare kit in dark grey, rear bumper extensions, dark grey roof rails, black sidebars, and a dark grey Isuzu front grille badge. Bespoke tailgate assist/damper, steel-branded graphics, and an illuminated puddle lamp system ensure it makes an impression even in the dark.
Inside, the pick-up is finished to a high standard, with steel-branded leather embossed headrests, luxury carpet mat set and an illuminated scuff plates. The nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, DAB radio, and eight speakers making long days behind the wheel easier to handle.
But it’s not just about looks. Underneath nothing’s changed, the Steel Edition sticks with Isuzu’s proven 1.9-litre turbo diesel, putting out 164PS and 360Nm. It’ll tow up to 3.5 tonnes, carry over a tonne in the back, and comes with shift-on-the-fly 4WD.
Add in a rear diff lock, hill descent control, trailer sway control and a stack of traction and braking tech, and it’s well set up for Scotland’s hills, farm tracks and grim winter mornings.
Comfort isn’t overlooked. Leather seats, heated fronts, an eight-way electric driver’s seat with lumbar support, dual-zone climate control and keyless entry all come as standard. It’s just as capable carting passengers to the mart as it is carrying feed blocks through a wet field.
At £42,705 CVOTR, the Steel Edition comes in just above the V- Cross, but its enhanced styling and interior finish make it a strong-value choice.
Road or field
On rough ground, the D-Max takes it in stride offering plenty of ground clearance, and the 18-inch matte dark grey alloys, fitted with off-road-ready tyres, give decent grip and soak up the bumps. The shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system engages smoothly.
On the road, the ride feels firm but steady, and the new bi-LED headlights with automatic high beam made night driving much easier, especially when moving between wooded areas and open stretches.
The reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors really came in handy in tight spots, especially combined with the folding heated door mirrors that have side indicators. It all makes for a pick-up that moves smoothly between farmyard and road.
The cab offers plenty of space and good visibility, with smart storage options like under-seat compartments, cupholders front and back, and door pockets that fit bottles. Features like the auto-dimming rearview mirror and wireless phone connectivity make everyday use easier.
Tax talk
Earlier this year, confusion emerged over the tax classification of double cab pick-ups when HMRC released draft guidance suggesting that some models could be reclassified as cars for tax purposes. This would have had big implications for rural businesses, affecting VAT recovery, capital allowances and company vehicle benefit-in-kind tax.
Under that guidance, these vehicles would lose their commercial status and the related tax benefits, leading to higher company car tax bills and no access to the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA). Businesses might also have faced difficulties reclaiming VAT on their pick-ups.
Thankfully, following feedback from farming groups and manufacturers, HMRC changed course. The final guidance, published earlier this year, confirms that double cab pick-ups will still be classed as commercial vehicles, provided they meet the standard 1 tonne payload rule.
That means:
- VAT can still be reclaimed on business use
- Vehicles qualify for capital allowances under the AIA
- Lower benefit-in-kind tax rates remain in place for company vehicles
- For rural businesses, this is a big relief. Farmers can keep choosing the right vehicles for the job without worrying about unexpected tax hits.

The Steel Edition builds on an already capable pick-up by adding just the right amount of style to appeal to a wider audience without losing the rugged, no-nonsense qualities that farmers rely on.
