NFUS president Andrew McCornick

It is not just a New Year, but a new decade, so my wish list has that firmly in mind.

I want access to MPs and Westminster Ministers to ensure that we avoid a No-Deal outcome to Brexit and Scottish farming is accounted for in all major bills coming forward on agriculture, trade, migration and environment.

The five-year promise on future funding during the election campaign must be fulfilled, ring fenced and delivered to Scotland for agriculture.

I want access to a competent labour supply both on farm and off-farm, seasonal and more permanent to harvest and process our valuable produce.

I want an agricultural policy for Scotland sooner rather than later that recognises the massive challenge of achieving the Scotland Food and Drink target of £30bn by 2030 and the 75% emissions reduction by 2030. That policy must drive in profitability, or farmers and crofters will be the next endangered species in Scotland.

I want a trade deal with Europe that ensures as free trade as possible in agri-goods. I want commonly agreed frameworks in place with the rest of the UK which is, by far and away, our biggest market.

I want a Standards Commission that will guarantee that our standards, our markets and our viability are not traded away in future trade deals that see us undermined by competition from nations where such standards are disregarded.

And, finally, I want our politicians to take time out from politicking and get on with the day job and deliver for the greater good in these challenging times.

After all, it is the season of goodwill.

Happy New Year from all at NFU Scotland!
