A BIOMASS expert from Scotland’s Rural College has been ranked as one of the most highly cited researchers from across the world, including Nobel laureates.

Vijay Kumar Thakur, Professor in New Products from Biomass at the South and West Faculty, was named in the Highly Cited Researchers 2020 list from Clarivate. He is among 6167 researchers from 60 countries and regions who have been recognised this year.

The annual list identifies scientists who have demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade.

Their names are drawn from publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index.

Professor Vijay’s research activities span the disciplines of Biorefining, Biomaterials, Chemistry, Composites, Manufacturing, Nanotechnology and Polymers, as well as all aspects of Advanced and Sustainable Materials.

“It's a great pleasure and honour to be amongst the world’s most influential researchers in the Highly Cited 2020 list," said Professor Vijay.

“I am really glad that the research output conducted over the years in the field of Biorefining and Advanced Materials has been usefully applied for further research globally by researchers from different disciplines.

“It reflects the academic strength of SRUC and the UK. Receiving this honour is a great encouragement to keep me moving forward in the development of sustainable materials and manufacturing for the future.”
