Castle Hill Hurricane lived up to his name at the 17th Annual Premier show and sale of Zwartbles at Carlisle, when he soared the storm to achieve the lead price of 2800gns for Banbury-based breeder, Sam Inns, Orchard Manor, Castle Hill, Upper Brailes.

His shearling ram, by Brickfield Cecil, is out of Castle Hill Amber, which goes back to Fosseway Trail-Blazer. Hurricane is also a full brother to the show winning tup, Castle Hill Elena. Placed fifth in his class at the pre-sale show, he was knocked down to Messrs Dow, Kirkpatrick Durham, Castle Douglas.

The champion at the pre-sale show achieved 2600gns for Stuart Craig, Wormerlaw, Kelso. His ram lamb, Craigies Johnny Cash, is a son of Wallacetown Cairn, whilst the dam, Craigies Freya goes back to Craigies Dictator. Scottish breeders, Liam and Ryan Sharp of the Paddock flock, Temple Croft, Gorghlech, Inverness, were the final bidders on this boy.

Best from Welsh breeders, G and L Owen, Llannerch Felys, Pandy Tudur, Abergele, was 2400gns paid for the second prize ram lamb, Cernyw Jugernot, purchased by Neil Millar and his mother Joyce of the Joyfield flock from Kirkpatrick Fleming, Lockerbie. A Mischief G-Force son, he is out of the Cernyw Deio sired-dam, Cernyw Glain.

Just behind on 2300gns was the second prize shearling, Wallridge Moor Hector, from Caroline Anderson, Wallridge Cottages, Ingoe, Northumberland. This Wallridge Moor Griff son is out of Cynefin Daisy, which goes back to Cynefin Arthur, and sold to Messrs Bullen, Tremeirchion, St Asaph, Denbighshire.

Three lots went under the hammer for 1800gns, with the first being Hayberries Hard Copy from P and S Addison, Hayberries, Mickleton, Barnard Castle. This shearling by Aquila Duplicate and out of a dam by Beech Hay Chancellor, stood first in its class at the pre-sale show and sold to Messrs Hancock and Sons, Eyam, Hope Valley, Derbyshire.

Stranraer-based breeder, Colin Duffy, Dunragit, received the same money from Sam Inns, Banbury, for Smiddy Hill Jeffrey, a ram lamb by Greystone Grouse, out of an Aquila After Shock sired-dam.

Heather Hourston, all the way from Orphir, Orkney, also went to 1800gns for a ram lamb for her Didcot flock. This was Rockford JD from the opposite end of the country, from Jason Kestell, Waterlands, Badgal, Cornwall. He is by Rockford Gambler and out of Rockford Galaxy Dream, which goes back to Wallacetown Dunbar.

Topping the female trade at 2400gns was Cynefin H, a gimmer from Olwen Hughes-Owen, Geirn, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey. A Bessiebell Casino daughter out of Cynefin Eurwen, which is by Hedgefield Brick Top, she sold to the Millars buying for their Joyfield.

On the other side of the equation, they sold a ewe lamb for 2000gns to Messrs Case, Lower Odcombe, Somerset. Joyfield Just A Babe, an Aquila Grand Slam daughter that stood third at the Royal Highland Showcase, is out of Bridgelands Cowslip, by Hedgefield Watch That Boy.

Colin Rae, Collin, Dumfries, also had a field day when his second prize gimmer, Wallacetown Honey, realised 2000gns to Messrs Jones, Llandrindod Wells, Powys. Backed by home-bred genetics on both sides, she is a daughter of Wallacetown Farmer, and out of Wallacetown Ember, by Wallacetown Cairn.

The reserve champion, Top Notch Just Be, a ewe lamb from Hannah Sloan, Rigghead, Collin, Dumfries, made 1700gns when selling to Messrs Heigh, Bentham, Lancaster. A daughter of Stainmore Highlight, which was first prize shearling at the Royal Highland Showcase, she is out of Top Notch Georgeous, by Smiddy Hill Felix.
