The beef trade is once again on fire as it crawls towards the £5 per kg that producers say is required to counter rising costs, having risen 5p on the week.
According to AHDB figures, R4L steers and R4L heifers cashed in at 443.3p (+5.2p on the week) and 445.5p (+5.8p), respectively, for the week ending April 9.
Deadweight prices this week also experienced more price gains, building on already record prices with some finishers quoting 440p for clean cattle and 398p for cows.
Farmers are welcoming the rise in the beef market – however, with the ongoing rise of costs many feel the market still has some way to go to hit that £5/kg to make a profit, though some farmers have been quoted above the 450p mark this week for deadweight cattle.
