A fantastic line-up of stock graced Stewartry showfield, last week, where the Clydesdale mare from William Gemmell, Holmhead of Boreland, Kirkcowan landed the supreme show championship in-front of a packed ringside of spectators.

The four-year-old mare, Holmhead Molly, was brought out by Arlene McKie and is sired by Rashillhouse Winston. Out of Ingleston Crystal, she was shown alongside her April-born filly foal, Holmhead Blossom.

Reserve show victor derived from the sheep lines in the form of the inter-breed champion from Douganhill Farms, Orchardton Mains, Palnackie. The Texel gimmer is an ET daughter of Proctors US President, out of a home-bred ewe by Teiglum Younggun – which stood inter-breed sheep at Dumfries Show, in 2019.

Galloway (Judge: A Scott, Barncleugh Cottage, Irongray). Champion and reserve – J and A Finlay, Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas. Supreme was Blackcraig Dora May, which also stood reserve native inter-breed at the Royal Highland Showcase last year and supreme at this year's Great Yorkshire Show. This cow is a daughter of Blackcraig Rasputin which had a half-share sold to the Troloss herd, and her dam, Dora May 8 of Knarie, has already bred a son sold privately for pedigree work at Markdhu. Reserve was the 10-month-old bull calf, Blackcraig Dyker. On his first outing, he is sired by Blackcraig Acrobat and out of Blackcraig Bertha. Belted Galloway (Judge: J Ward, Whitstonehill Farm, Tundergarth, Lockerbie). Champion – D and K Keiley, Carton Croft, Haugh of Urr with the yearling heifer, Huntfield Yvett. Having been purchased as a calf at foot from the breed society sale at Castle Douglas, in 2020, she is by Huntfield Sebastian and out of Huntfield Uppy. This heifer has already enjoyed show success having stood first in her class at the Great Yorkshire, Royal Highland and National Show at Wigtown. Reserve – RKG Farms, Irelandton, Twynholm, Kirkcudbright with the two-year-old in-calf heifer, Auchengassel Sollya, which is sired by Speddoch Unique. She stood third at the National Show at Wigtown and will be forward for sale in October at Castle Douglas. Bull – RKG Farms. Cow – J, J and N Adams, Townend Farm, Derbyshire. In-calf heifer, calf – Sir JCL Keswick, Muil, Speddoch. Yearling heifer, pair – D and K Keiley.

Simmental (Judge: B Walton, Wallets Marts, New Market Street). Champion and reserve – HR Dunlop, Canee Farm, Kirkcudbright. Supreme was the yearling bull, Red Bull. He is sired by an Irish-bred bull and out of a home-bred cow. Reserve was the yearling bull, Pepsi Max, which is bred the same way as the champion. All classes – HR Dunlop.

He is an AI son of Harestone Hercules and out of the home-bred Ricnick Lingo. This boy stood reserve junior male at the Great Yorkshire and second in his class at the Royal Highland. Reserve was the 15-month-old Charolais heifer, Ricnick Sapphire. Another by Harestone Hercules, she is out of Ricnick Precious and stood third in her class at the Royal Highland, fourth in her class at the Great Yorkshire and first at Cumberland Show. Holstein (Judge: G Lucas). Champion – B and M Yates, East Logan, Castle Douglas with the third-calving cow, Logan Fitz Becky EX92. Giving 55kg per day at 4.5% BF and 3.1% P, she is on her second outing and sired by Toc Farm Fitz. Reserve – Firthhead Partners with the heifer in-milk, Meiklefirth Tattoo Sara. She stood third at the Royal Highland Show. Heifer not in-milk or in-calf, in-calf heifer, heifer in-milk – Firthhead Partners. In-calf cow – Messrs Wallace, Syplana, Kirkcudbright. Blackface (Judge: D Ferguson, Drananndow Farm, Newton Stewart). Champion and reserve – W Ramsay and Sons, Milnmark, Dalry. Supreme was the £2800 Gosland four-shear tup, The Waiter, which was purchased at Lanark in 2019. Having stood reserve champion at the Royal Highland, he is by an £11,000 Auldhouseburn sire. Reserve was a one-crop ewe by a £9000 Grimmet ram bought at Newton Stewart in 2019. She is out of a home-bred ewe by a £16,000 Dyke. Ram, ewe, gimmer, ewe lamb – W Ramsay and Sons.
