A summit on wildfires is to take place in the Highlands this week.

Organised by Kate Forbes MSP, around 30 delegates will gather in Kiltarlity, a short distance from Inverness, to discuss feedback from recent wildfires in Cannich and Daviot as well as ways to increase community preparation and public awareness for future incidents.

Mairi Gougeon MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Islands, is expected to attend along with representatives from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Forestry and Land Scotland, NatureScot and local gamekeepers who assisted with recent efforts.

Kate Forbes MSP said: “First and foremost, I am hugely grateful for the tireless efforts of everyone who brought these blazes under control and also ensured there was no loss of life.

“Unfortunately these wildfires are unlikely to be the last we see in the Highlands, and the aim of the summit is to learn any lessons from tackling these recent fires as well as consider what can be done to assist prevention in future.

“The recent incidents show that careless actions can have devastating results, so it is hugely important that we do everything we can to raise awareness of the dangers and also use all of the available tools at our disposal. I look forward to constructive discussions.”

In June, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service issued four wildfire warnings in just three weeks, with north west Highland given a ‘very high’ warning, whilst all other areas of Scotland face an ‘extreme’ rating.

The organisation warned that many rural and remote communities are hugely impacted by wildfires, which can cause significant environmental and economic damage.

At the time, Group Commander Niall MacLennan said: “We are urging the public not to light disposable barbecues or campfires in areas where there is vegetation, much of which is tinder dry or to discard cigarettes carelessly.

"As the warm and dry weather continues, so too does the risk of wildfire. The recent wildfire incidents at Cannich and Daviot, near Inverness and Campsie Fells, north of Glasgow show just how large these fires can become.
