Two women have been charged following enquiries after a ‘peaceful and light hearted’ protest in Fort William last weekend. The planned protest was conducted in opposition to bid to establish a national park in the Lochaber area. The rally had over 100 people attend alongside a tractor, pick-up trucks, and even a small flock of hens.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were made aware of a planned protest in the Fort William area on Saturday, February 24, 2024. The crowd that was gathered began an unauthorised procession and a decision was taken to manage this to ensure public safety and minimise disruption to the community. No arrests were made at the time.

“Following enquiries, two women, aged 49 and 58, have been charged and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Local John Carmichel, who was at the protest, said: “I counted 127 people at the protest and I know to speak to at least 90% of them. There was a huge spectrum of folk there, bairns, toddlers, teenagers right up to some even older than me, and I am in my 70s. It was a peaceful, light hearted and fun event which I found uplifting and motivating.”
