Interbreed dairy title goes to Holstein champion at GYS

Inter-breed dairy

was the Holstein champion Futureproof Sidekick Squaw, a second calver from the partnership of Ben Coates, Shipley, and James and Katie Robinson, Cumbria.

Purchased privately from Alastair Smith, Northumberland, this VG89 max scored heifer by Walnutlawn Sidekick and out of Futureproof Super Squaw calved in December. The heifer was shown giving 50 litres daily.

Churchroyd Heather 123 Ex94, a Dairy Shorthorn fourth-calver from the Collins family in Dewsbury, claimed the reserve overall. The Churchroyd Wild Card daughter was shown two months fresh and giving 50 litres daily. She was breed champion at UK Dairy Day last year.

The junior title went to David Hodgson’s Holstein heifer, Wormanby Kitty, a daughter of Delaberge Pepper out of Wormanby Lambda Kitty, from the herd based at Carlisle. The maximum scored VG88-2yr calved in January and is due again on New Year’s Day. She stood first in the junior two-year-old class at UK Dairy Day in March.

Standing reserve was the any other breed champion, Kedar Aldo Snogging, a Brown Swiss heifer from Jack Wilson, Appleby. The 2022-born Aldo SG daughter, out of Kedar Blooming Smooches, was purchased from Jonny Lochhead and family, Dumfries. She was reserve breed champion at UK Dairy Day.

Holsteins also won the Blythewood dairy pairs and the groups. The winning duo was made up of the supreme, Futureproof Sidekick Squaw, and Oliver Greenhalgh’s Belaw Tropic Elm, by Peak Tropic.

In reserve was an Ayrshire pairing comprising Andy Rimmer’s Holmeswood El Clover and Ian Hutchinson’s Tontine Pixie Stella.

The winning group of Holsteins was made up of the supreme, the reserve Ingleview Jimmy Bevin, Ingleview Loyal Gail from Miss E Atkinson, Huntholme Dalliance Kitty from the Southwell family, and Wormanby Pepper Kim from David Hodgson.

Ayrshire

The Ayrshire championship went to Andrew and Laura Rimmer, Widnes, with the home-bred fourth calver Holmeswood El Clover. Classified Ex92, she was shown 30 days fresh and giving 36 litres daily. The Sandyford Elvis daughter was honourable mention at UK Dairy Day in 2023.

Standing reserve was the second prize cow to the champion Sanderson Skyfall Suprise by Troutbeck Skyfall from David Sanderson, Wigton. This was the first time out for this sixth calver, brought out by Jake Sayer. Classified Ex92, she calved at the end of March and was shown giving 40 litres daily.

Dairy Shorthorn

Churchroyd Heather 123, a fourth calver from the Collins family, Dewsbury, claimed the breed honours and reserve inter-breed title.

Standing reserve was another from the same home and a daughter of the champion, Churchroyd Heather 151, by Gorbro Storm Hunter. She was shown 10 weeks fresh and classified VG88 max score as a heifer.

Holstein

Futureproof Sidekick Squaw, a second calver from the partnership of Ben Coates, Shipley, and James and Katie Robinson, Cumbria, not only won the breed honours but also the inter-breed dairy title.

Standing reserve was the home-bred third calver Ingleview Jimmy Bevin, from the Butterfield family, Lancaster. The Hillhead Jimmy daughter was paraded giving 50 litres daily, having calved twins in March.

Jersey

Saxown Craze Cash 119, by River Valley Circus Craze, lifted the Jersey championship for Richard Saxby, Tiverton.

Brought out by Mr Saxby’s son Tom, the third calver was breed champion at last year’s show and in 2019. Classified Ex90, she calved in March and was shown giving 35 litres daily.

Matthew Richardson, Doncaster, stood reserve with Gilbrook Viral Design, a Bushlea PD Viral daughter that classified Ex93. The fifth calver was honourable mention at last year’s show and exhibitor breed champion at the Lincolnshire Show in June.
