A SHEEP had a lucky escape at the weekend after it fell down a shaft at Ingleborough.

A Cave Rescue volunteer went down the fluted shaft at Newby Head on Saturday morning, managed to get it into an 'animal sack' before colleagues pulled the pair safely back to the surface.

A spokesperson for Cave Rescue Organisation said: "A small team were mobilised to recover the stricken animal.

"One team member descended the shaft and was able to capture the sheep and encourage it into the animal haul sack.

"Both were then carefully brought to the surface and the sheep released, a little hungry but otherwise unharmed."

CRO was called out again on Saturday at 6.30pm to help a 27 year old man after he injured his left ankle while coming down Ingleborough.

The walker was driven off the mountain back to the CRO headquarters in Clapham where he was transferred to the Yorkshire Ambulance service.
