Two exceptional runs from Ian Brownlie’s Lark and Ian Fleming’s Tui led the field at Milton respectively, with no holes and faults deducted – only single and half points here and there.

Mule ewes and gimmers running on a long, rising course were key to dogs being able to show their best form and achieve good work.

The course was set to national standard with a single required after the shed and pen.

Lark (D Robertson’s Joe, A Watson’s Fan) and Tui (I Fleming’s Tor, A Aitchison’s Beth) had similar runs, separated by only two points. Both worked well outbye, but drew the judge’s attention as they turned the sheep round the starting post. Two good drives followed. Lark lost a little at the cross drive gate and Tui’s turn out of that same gate was slightly wider than ideal, but both went on to complete their runs with good work at hand. Lark finished in first with Tui close behind.

Clean outbye work settled the sheep for Ian Sutherland’s Dan and set him up for success at Melvich where Cheviot gimmers ran well on a flat 400yd course, if dogs handled them appropriately. Dogs that upset the sheep at the lift suffered the consequences on the course.

After a clean start, Ian’s Dan (Hielan Cap) (J MacDiarmid’s Rab, S Robertson’s Ruby) had a good drive, but the pen alerted the sheep to potential entrapment and they milled around at the mouth of the pen. One gimmer broke, but Dan retrieved her and penned the packet. Ian let an opportunity go by before he brought Dan in on a good shed and they earned first place.

Similarly, Lynn Ronaldson’s Bob (S Jones' Straid Bob, OS Thomas’ Madog Floss) started well and had a good course, and although Bob had a little more trouble at hand, he penned and shed and completed the work as runner-up, a single point behind Dan.

Mule ewes behaved reasonably on a flat course at Skipness, but they tested the weaker dogs and were inclined to bolt on the turn round the handler.

A nicely flowing run from John MacKillop’s Skye Glen (SL Davidson’s Dan, S Campbell’s Queen) took first place with good lines and the best drive of the day.

Cameron Dickson’s Tom (DK Evans’ Ace, U Stromer’s Caefelin Gwen) worked very well to control a difficult packet and finished in second place, only a point behind Glen.

A wet and windy day hindered communication on the field, but good handling gave Seumas Campbell and Queen success at Lochbroom, despite the weather.

Queen (RJ Hutchinson’s Jock, I Wilkie’s Floss) ran out cleanly to the Cheviot gimmers, and although she lifted slightly off line she got them on line on the fetch. She made good work of holding the sheep at the mouth of the pen and persuaded them in; a clean shed completed her winning run.

At Coltcrooks, well behaved Texel and Mule ewes ran well over a long, flat field on a windy day but were heavy to lift. Andrew Dickman’s Meg (Kate) (S v der Sweep’s Gary, A Smart’s Kim) worked well outbye, but as she turned the sheep round the starting post, they tried to widen their scope and take in the pen as well. Meg put them through the narrow gap between the two structures and put them along the first leg of the drive on a good line. Good work at hand completed the run and her good start gave her first place, equal on points with second.

Dean Aitken’s Tweeddale Vicki (D Aitken’s Tweeddale Jamie and Tammi) ran out and lifted beautifully. After a good first leg, she had a waver on the cross drive, but she got all her gates and completed her run with a clean pen and shed which put her level on points with Meg, but finished as runner up.

At Ardlamont, Zander Kent’s Lucy (P Byrne’s Moss and Ciara) was slightly short at the top, but lifted his Blackface ewes and had a good course, until a break at the pen threatened that. Once regrouped and penned a good shed completed the run in contention for first place and a smooth run off confirmed that.

Stuart Davidson's Dan (RW Harris’ Flynn and Straid Joe) had a steady run; with only minor points dropped. He matched Lucy on points, but took second place after the decider.
