Fire crews called to barn blaze near Coundon, County Durham

Fire crews were called to a large barn blaze on Tuesday night, with residents told to avoid the area.

County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service attended the blaze at Grange Hill near Coundon, at around 5pm on Tuesday (September 9).

Pictures show outbuildings engulfed in flames as smoke billows into the sky. 

No one was injured during the incident.

It is understood firefighters tackled the blaze throughout the night. 

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 5.01pm yesterday (Tuesday), we received a call reporting a barn fire at Grange Hill Farm in Coundon. Upon arrival, crews were met with a well-developed fire involving over 100 tonnes of baled straw.

“The initial response included seven fire appliances, a logistics support unit, a water bowser, and three officers. Support was also provided by farm staff, North East Ambulance Service and Durham Constabulary.

“Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

“The fire is now under control, with two appliances remaining on scene. Operations are expected to continue for several days.

“Smoke may be visible from the A689 and A688 near the incident site.

“This is not a cause for concern, but we advise motorists and nearby residents to remain aware.”

Durham Police released a statement on Tuesday evening urging the public to stay away from the area.

A spokesperson said: "Police and County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service are currently on scene at a large barn fire at Grange Hill near Coundon.

"We request due to the changing wind conditions that members of the public do not attend the area and where possible keep windows closed."
