A fire that broke out at a farm over the weekend is believed to have been started "deliberately".

Emergency services descended upon Stainsby Hill Farm, just off the A19 in Thornaby, on Sunday afternoon (October 19) after the blaze broke out.

Firefighters from one engine spent nearly 20 hours tackling the flames, which was first called in shortly after 4pm.

Police now say it is believed the fire was started on purpose - as they launch an investigation into the incident.

A force spokesperson said: "At 4.30pm on Sunday 19 October police were called to reports of a fire at a farm at The Cottage (at Stainsby Hill Farm) in Thornaby.

"The fire is believed to have been started deliberately. Anyone who has information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 201152."

A fire service spokesperson added: "Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on October 19 at 4.04pm to an incident at Stainsby Hill Farm, Acklam Road, Thornaby.

"One fire engine in attendance from Thornaby. The stop call was received at 11:59 on October 20."
