The evening began on a fitting note with the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by RHASS and presented by its chair, James Logan.
It was a moment of unanimous admiration as John Cameron CBE was recognised for his extraordinary lifelong dedication to Scottish agriculture, an accolade that drew genuine heartfelt applause from across the room. The room stood in awe as John made his way to the stage, stopping several times to soak in the recognition from his peers.
Accepting the award, John said: “I am absolutely flabbergasted - at my age to receive this award came as such a shock. I thought I was just coming for a night out. I have to admit that I am now getting old but I have enjoyed my long life and never contemplated anything like this would happen.”
A towering figure in the industry, John is widely credited as having been the largest sheep farmer in Europe at one time. Over the years, he has managed an impressive farming enterprise spanning seven farms across Fife and West Perthshire.
In his address James highlighted that John’s influence soared well beyond his own land. He has represented the NSA, SBA and QMS, and served as NFU Scotland president from 1979 to 1984. A key industry figure for more than five decades, John was instrumental in gaining recognition for Scotland within the European Sheep Group and securing improved support for hill farmers.
James highlighted that as a former president of NFU Scotland , a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society, and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), his contributions to the farming community have been many and that there was no one more fitting of this accolade
