Evening Sidekick Jennifer rewrote the record books at AgriScot – securing the Super Cow championship for a third consecutive year.

This year’s dairy section was particularly noteworthy, with entries doubling on 2024 numbers, marking the strongest turnout in a decade. Event chairman Gilmour Lawrie praised both the exceptional quality and depth of stock, highlighting the continued excellence of the show.

The Super Cow finale brought together champions from the Holstein, Red and White, Ayrshire, Jersey, and any other dairy breeds.

Judge, Iwan Morgan of Nantybwla, Carmarthen, commended each section winner for their correctness, strength, and dairy character, but it was Jennifer that Mr Morgan was most impressed by.

He said: “To have had five calves and still carry an udder like that – full of veins, tremendous ligament – she’s simply out of this world. From her beautiful head to the strength of her loin, she has the presence and character that lifts her above the rest.”

Owned by the Wilson family of Evening Holsteins, Jennifer’s victory cements a historic hat-trick, following Super Cow wins in 2023 and 2024. The seven-year-old cow, sired by Walnutlaw Sidekick and out of Evening Stanleycup Jennifer Ex96, is part of the family’s 450-cow herd at Thursby, near Carlisle, managed by James, Louise, Charlotte, and Emma Wilson. And the good news kept coming in the Evening Household this week, as the big cow secured a maximum EX97 classification.

Calved at the end of July and currently producing 55 litres a day, she was paraded by an emotional Emma Wilson.

“This one hit even deeper after the tough start she had to her lactation. She was unwell, and to see her come back from that and rise to the top again – it’s the greatest comeback we’ve ever witnessed. What a day. What a memory. What a girl,” said Emma.

With a monumental show career behind her, the fifth calver claimed the supreme championship at all three of the UK's major dairy shows in 2023, as well as earning an honourable mention at this year's Borderway UK Dairy Expo.

In 2024, she also earned the All Breeds All Britain second calver champion title. Purchased two years ago by the late Salvador Esquierdo, the five-year-old now resides in the Scott family’s Nethervalley herd.

Classified Ex92 in her third – just one point off the maximum score.

She is a direct descendant of Old Mill-E Snickerdoodle Ex-94-USA, which was the UK’s first Ex97 pointed Brown Swiss.

Oxton Ric Wildeyes, a seven-year-old Shorthorn cow from Shaun Dixon, Bishop Auckland, had to settle for reserve after claiming champion here last year. This Ex94 sixth calver is giving 45 litres per day at 5% BF. She was bought privately as a third calver from Oxton Farms, Tadcaster.

Newcomer wins Super Heifer

A newcomer to AgriScot came out tops when the Holstein Newcroft Lambda Farida from John and Dave Airey, Westhall, Carnforth, claimed the supreme Super Heifer honours.

It was a memorable debut for John and Dave, when their VG87 heifer impressed the judge as soon as she entered the ring. Sired by Farnear Delta Lambda, the home-bred three-year-old is yielding 41 litres a day after calving in January. Since then she has scooped the junior championship at the Royal Lancaster, Great Eccleston, and Garstang shows, as well as the breed honours at Westmorland.

Judge Iwan Morgan praised her as a standout from the outset for her powerful frame and chest width, along with a “snug, high and wide udder, great feet and legs, and a hard top.

Just pipped at the post for the Super Heifer was Hannah Bown's Red and White Holstein, Hanview Snowdrop Stocking Red. The VG87 two-year-old by Cycle McGucci Jordy Red is producing 38 litres per day and won the junior Red and White Holstein class at Dairy Day in September.

Reserve Holstein was the jointly owned junior, Boclair Davinci Ariel 2, by EBA Davinci, from David and John Brewster, Boclair and David Gray, East Kilbride. Bred from five generations of VG or Ex-classified cows, she calved in June and currently giving 45 litres. She was first placed junior two-year-old in milk at Dairy Day.

Youngstock impress

A newly introduced youngstock class drew an impressive turnout, with top-quality calves travelling from across the country to compete.

At the top of this section was the stylish yearling heifer Absolute Doorman Santorini, from Joshua Atkinson and Joanne Coulhurst, Edenfield, Preston. Sired by Val-Bisson Doorman and purchased earlier this year at Graham Kirkby’s Absolute Genetics sale at Carlisle, Santorini was champion at Great Eccleston and Garstang Shows, and champion calf at the Royal Lancashire.

“She carried strength from her tip to her tail, had a fantastic spring of rib and the best feet and legs in the class,” said Mr Morgan

In reserve was Whinchat Crown Royal Sara, a June 2024-born heifer, jointly owned by David and John Brewster, Bcolair and David Gray, Grayridge Holsteins. This Blondin Crown Royal daughter, purchased at the Whinchat dispersal sale in April, is bred from a VG87 pointed three-year-old Unix dam.
