Prize spring lambs attracted great interest and good prices at CCM Skipton's Easter sale with breeder Mark Evans, Tower Gate Farm, Steeton, repeating last year's championship success, thanks to his pair of heavyweight Downs/Texel-cross lambs.

Sixty-four lambs were put forward and the champion pen was picked out by judge Ben Gray, a 55kg Suffolk-x pair from Mr Evans that sold at £242 top gross to family-run wholesale butcher J&E Medcalf, of Halifax, who also bought his first prize single 52kg Downs lamb for £225.

Charles Marwood and family, who nurture some 600 pure Charollais lambs at Foulrice Farm, Whenby, near York, stood reserve champion with 51kg lambs that won the Continental pairs class, making £225 to Ikhlas Meats, Bradford.

The title of best single Continental went to Robert and Jackie Towers, Greenland Farm, Ingleton, with a 45kg Charollais away at £220, or 488.9 per kilo top to GB Holt, Rossendale.

The same purchasers also paid £222 for the Marwoods’ 51kg class runner-up, plus £225 for the second prize 53kg Continental pairs again from the Towers, then £195 for the third prize 40kg Down-x pair from the same home, which was also responsible for the second prize single 54kg Down-x lamb, another Ikhlas Meats’ purchase at £230.

Calderdale brother and sister, Stephen and Emily Short, of South Owram, Halifax, picked up two Down-x tickets, a third with a 54kg single making £210 to K&Y Meats, Bradford, plus runner-up with 47kg pairs, also falling to J&E Medcalf at £296.

Spring lambs averaged £205.57 per head, 432.7p/kg (SQQ 452.1p/kg), the 4,010 prime sheep forward achieving a total overall selling average of 407.6p/kg, or £189.98 (SQQ average 419.5p/kg, 3,485 hoggs levelling at £189.98, 407.61p/kg (SQQ 419.5p/kg), with highs of £270 for a 79kg Charollais again from the Marwoods and 564.1p/kg for Beltex-x from the Oldfield brothers, Newsholme.
