NFU Cymru has stepped up its campaign activity ahead of the 2026 Senedd election, highlighting key issues it wants addressed by the next Welsh Government.

With just four weeks to go until voters head to the polls on May 7, the union is drawing attention to the concerns of Welsh farmers as campaigning gathers pace following the dissolution of the Senedd.

NFU Cymru said it aims to ensure agriculture, food production, rural jobs and land management are central to the election debate. The next Senedd will see 96 Members elected across 16 new constituencies.

Union president Abi Reader said the election comes at a time of global uncertainty and presents an opportunity to prioritise the role of Welsh agriculture.

“In a world which is increasingly volatile and unpredictable there is now an important opportunity to make sure Welsh agriculture, the food we produce, the jobs we support and the landscape we care for are all at the front and centre of this election campaign,” she said.

In the run-up to polling day, NFU Cymru plans to release a series of case study videos featuring farmers from across Wales. The videos are intended to outline the challenges facing the industry, as well as proposed policy solutions and future opportunities.

The campaign builds on the union’s 'Growing Forward' manifesto, launched in June 2025, which sets out its priorities for the next Senedd term.

Ms Reader said the videos would give farmers an opportunity to share their experiences directly and highlight issues affecting the sector nationwide.

“Having launched our Growing Forward Senedd Election manifesto last year, we wanted to take this opportunity to bring these key asks to life with a series of case study videos over the next few weeks,” she said.

“These short clips see farmers speaking from the heart on a range of issues which matter to them and experiences that are shared by their counterparts across the country.”

She added that it was important for prospective Senedd members and the next Welsh Government to consider these priorities, stressing that agriculture has the potential to deliver wider economic and environmental benefits across Wales.

NFU Cymru said it hopes to work closely with the incoming government to create the policy and regulatory conditions needed for the sector to grow.
