Search the Public Notice PortalGUARDIANS of the Yorkshire Dales have rejected the advice of their officers and supported plans for a modern slurry storage system at a Grassington dairy farm.
Members of the national park authority had been recommended to refuse the application for a slurry bag at Town Head Farm, in that it would create an 'alien and incongruous feature' in the sensitive landscape, but instead showed their support for dairy farming in the Dales and voted overwhelmingly in support.
It means members - who voted 12-2 in favour - are minded to approve the plan for a geotextile slurry storage bag at the family-run farm, on the edge of the village, but that the application will return to the next planning meeting of the authority for a final decision.
The meeting of the planning committee, at the authority's Bainbridge offices on Tuesday, heard that the application had been called to committee by member, Richard Foster, who lives in Hebden.
Cllr Foster, who also represents Wharfedale on North Yorkshire Council, said: “There has long been concern within the community about the risk to waterways from the business of the farm. Whilst I understand the responsibility is with the farmer the perception that we just said no to measures that could have prevented a incident without debate does not sit well with me."
Applicant, Michael Oversby, said his family had run the farm since 1938 and that the application was a 'direct consequence of UK legislation'. If there had been a more suitable site for it, he assured members that would have been the one being debated instead of the one before the committee."
