Fendt has launched a limited edition 900 Vario to mark production of 50,000 tractors in the series, as the manufacturer celebrates 30 years since the model first went into production.
Limited to just 300 machines worldwide, the anniversary edition includes a series of subtle design and comfort touches, including an engraved ‘50,000’ door sill, embroidered floor mats, titanium leather seat trim and a commemorative badge on the bonnet.
The special edition also draws on earlier styling cues from the range, with four colour options inspired by previous generations. These include Fendt’s traditional black finish, linked to the 2005 Design Line and the so-called ‘Black Madonna’ tractors, alongside steel blue, black/red and nature green.
The original 900 Vario was launched at Agritechnica in 1995, and was the world’s first tractor to feature a continuously variable, power-split transmission. Since then, it has become one of Fendt’s most recognisable and widely used models across multiple sectors.
Fendt’s Ed Dennett said the range had built its reputation on a series of industry firsts, helping it stand out over three decades of development.
“The 900 has long been the tractor of firsts. A true pioneer,” he said, pointing to innovations such as electronically controlled fuel injection, the introduction of the Vario Terminal and the later Tractor Management System (TMS), which links engine and transmission operation to automatically optimise performance.
Later developments saw increasing power outputs and technical upgrades across successive generations, including the introduction of independent suspension, higher top speeds and improved cab design. By 2010, output had risen to 390hp, alongside the arrival of the VarioGrip system, which allows operators to adjust tyre pressure from the cab to reduce soil compaction and improve efficiency.
“Innovations like VarioGrip have kept the 900 Vario one step ahead over the past 30 years,” Dennett added.
The fifth generation, introduced in 2013, brought further engine changes, including a new Deutz power unit with twin turbochargers and a redesigned intercooler system. A reversible cooling fan was also added to improve performance in dusty conditions and reduce downtime.
Dennett said the model’s versatility had helped it find a place well beyond agriculture, with strong demand from forestry and construction users thanks to its mix of power, efficiency and flexibility.
The current sixth generation, launched in 2019, underpins the anniversary model. It features the VarioDrive four-wheel-drive system from the larger 1000 series, while the top-spec 942 delivers up to 415hp from a 9.0-litre MAN engine.
A further update in 2021 introduced the FendtONE operating system, designed to better connect in-cab controls with office-based farm management.
Dennett said the limited run was a fitting way to recognise the model’s legacy, with demand for the 300 units expected to be strong.
“It is a fitting mark of appreciation that Fendt has chosen to recognise the importance of the 900 Vario with this new 50,000 limited edition model,” he said. “We expect the 300 tractors will find their owners very quickly.”
