A run off called at Durness, to separate the two leading runs from John MacKillop’s Hillrunner Gary and Ian Sutherland’s Dan deemed Gary the winner.
Cheviot gimmers and yeld ewes behaved well on a course that started on the flat, but rose to the lift post.
Gary (S Macauley’s Mirk, E Nilsson’s Hillrunner Tesla) ran out to his sheep and after a difficult lift he went on to a good drive; an excellent pen and shed completed the run in contention for first place, confirmed by the run off.
Conversely, Dan (Hielan Cap) (J MacDiarmid’s Rab, T Coghill Robertson’s Ruby) started out well outbye, which stood him in good stead when his drive was not so smooth and he experienced the common issue of the gimmers’ distrust of the pen. A good shed put him into the decider round.
Mosse Magnusson notched up two wins at the weekend, taking the lead at St Boswells with Don and at Milton, with Hillrunner Nell.
Texel gimmers proved tricky to handle, especially in the morning, on a big downhill course at St Boswells.
Don (DK Evans’ Derwen Doug, T Procter’s Gill) ran out and lifted well, fetched the sheep to Mosse and although he drove them away nicely, his line was low on the cross drive. Despite that, Don got his gate and penned the packet after retrieving a break. A good shed completed the run with a clear lead.
On a rising course at Milton that made for good viewing for handlers and spectators, well managed Mule gimmers responded very well to the dogs, and although they drew to the right of the handler on the fetch and on the return to the pen, that was no problem for good dogs.
Nell (R Ellis’ Todd, CM Magnusson’s Midderry Beth) ran out slightly short, but corrected herself, lifted smoothly and had a good fetch. The drive went well, with just minor wiggles and a good pen followed.
Mindful of time wearing on, Mosse called Nell in to split the sheep and made a hurried shed which gave him his second win, but with a narrower lead than the previous day.
