A Devon poultry processor has warned it is operating at the limit after water restrictions threatened its ability to maintain food safety and animal welfare standards.
2 Sisters Food Group said its Willand factory near Cullompton was receiving only the minimum water supply needed to continue processing birds safely.
The company said it had already cut usage by almost 30%, but could not reduce consumption further without risking compliance with hygiene and welfare requirements.
The warning comes as South West Water continues conservation measures across Devon following high demand during prolonged hot weather.
After discussions with 2 Sisters, the water company agreed to increase flow and pressure to the site, but the processor said restrictions were still affecting operations.
South West Water said household supplies and public health remained its priority, followed by animal welfare and commercial users.
A hosepipe ban remains in place across parts of Devon and Dorset, with customers urged to limit non-essential water use.
The situation highlights the challenges facing food processors during periods of water stress, with reliable supplies essential to maintaining production standards.
