A Vauxhall Corsa was torched in the field of a Darlington dairy farm last night.

The incident happened at Acorn Dairy in Archdeacon Newton just before 10.15pm on Thursday (July 16).

Durham Police confirmed officers received a call and that the fire was extinguished by fire crews.

Acorn Dairy posted on social media, and said: "What to say… second one in a week on tinder dry grassland."

The organic milk producer, run by the Tweddle family, added: "We have all our gates barred and locked".

Durham police said: "Police received a call just before 10.15pm yesterday (July 16) reporting a Vauxhall Corsa on fire in a field in Archdeacon Newton, near Darlington.

"Colleagues from the fire service attended and extinguished the fire."

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.07pm on Thursday, July 16 to a car on fire in a farm field in Archdeacon Newton, Darlington.

“One fire engine from Darlington Fire Station attended.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one high pressure hose reel to put out the fire before leaving the scene at 10.07pm.”

The incident follows a wildfire on July 12 at High Shincliffe near Durham University’s Graham Sports Centre after a prolonged period of hot weather.

That blaze tore through an area equivalent to 14 football pitches.

The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: "Strong winds caused that fire to spread rapidly across more than 100,000 square metres, and it was officially classed as a wildfire as a result.

"Four fire engines attended, and crews used two high pressure hose reels and five fire beaters to extinguish the blaze in around two hours."

Firefighters are working with police to determine the cause of the High Shincliffe fire.
