Farming content creator Cammy Wilson has joined forces with SP Energy Networks to raise awareness of the risks posed by overhead power lines and underground electricity cables on agricultural sites.
The Ayrshire farmer, who shares his day-to-day experiences online through The Sheep Game, has attracted a huge audience on TikTok and Instagram, with millions of views and hundreds of thousands of followers.
Through the campaign, Cammy is encouraging farmers, contractors and land managers to be more aware of potential electrical hazards when operating machinery in fields and farmyards.
SP Energy Networks said the increasing size of modern agricultural machinery means there is a greater risk of equipment coming too close to live electricity infrastructure, with even brief contact potentially having life-changing consequences.
Across the company’s network area, more than 1000 safety incidents were reported on farms and rural land during 2025. These included a fatal accident when a vehicle-mounted crane came into contact with an 11kV overhead power line.
As part of the campaign, Cammy highlights simple precautions farmers can take, including knowing the height of machinery, checking clearance distances and being aware of the location of power lines around the farm.
“Overhead power lines are something we see every day across our fields, but often they become part of the background and we stop noticing them,” Cammy said.
“That's the problem. It only takes one moment of not looking up to change everything – and with farm machinery getting bigger, it's now easier than ever to get closer to overhead power lines than you realise.
“That's why knowing the warning signs and your height clearance is essential. One of the simplest things you can do is know the height of your machinery and the height of any overhead lines on your farm. It’s an easy step to take and one that could even save your life.”
Health and safety director at SP Energy Networks, Sean Griffiths said farmers should remain particularly vigilant during the busy harvest period.
“We know many in the farming community are heading into one of the busiest and most demanding times of the year,” he said.
“With increasingly large machinery and tight deadlines as harvest gets underway, it's more important than ever to keep electrical safety front of mind.
“When we look at the incidents recorded across our network last year – particularly during harvest season – it's a stark reminder of the very real risks that are out there every day. A few simple checks and precautions can make a big difference, so make sure you know the warning signs.”
