It was another successful day for Delfur Nifty when United Auctions’ Donald Young tapped the Simmental cow as his overall choice of champion of champions at Turriff Show.
The cow, from former MSP Edward Mountain’s Delfur Farms, Rothes, Aberlour, was paraded with her Islavale Magnum-sired heifer calf, Nifty S1. Sired by Ballymoney Larry and out of Delfur Joyful, she was brought out by herd manager Garry Patterson.
This marks her third show supreme this season having taken the champion of champions at Angus and New Deer. Nifty was also crowned inter-breed cattle supreme at Banchory and reserve breed champion at the Royal Highland. This is alongside the plethora of titles she took last year as an in-calf heifer, to include the supreme at Black Isle and Grantown.
Inter-breed beef judge Keith Redpath, Kelso said: “The Simmental cow is hard to go past – she’s big and powerful, and is making an excellent job of her calf. They're a good outfit.”
Mr Young found his reserve overall in the coloured, in-hand light-legged champion from Sunday, Rochdale Rebel from Samantha Winn, Premnay, Inch.
This three-year-old native gelding is by a Friesian stallion and has had quite a show season, taking first prizes at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire.
Supreme in the sheep lines went to the Ingram family with a one-crop Charollais ewe from sons Gregor and Bruce Ingram’s Loanhead flock, based at Logie Durno, Inverurie.
Regular winners here, their ewe previously took the breed honours at this year’s Royal Highland Show. She is by the 16,000gns Foxhill Va Va Voom and out of a home-bred show ewe.
Inter-breed sheep judge Cammy Wilson of The Sheep Game said: “She’s an absolute standout, showy ewe and showed herself well in the ring.”
Mr Wilson picked out the Texel champion from the Knox family, Mid Haddo, Fyvie as his reserve.
Securing her second reserve inter-breed sheep title this year, the one-crop ewe is by the 20,000gns Sportsmans Grand Slam and out of a home-bred daughter of Harestone Eldorado. She was champion and reserve inter-breed at New Deer last month and stood third at the Royal Highland.
The inter-breed sheep pairs competition, featuring the male and female champion from each section, saw Aberchirder’s Craig Paterson, with a pair of Suffolks from Cranorskie, take the overall.
Reserve went to a duo of Blue Texels from David Gray, Ettrick, Selkirk, who had come to Turriff as part of the breed’s National Show where he took the championship with a gimmer by the 10,000gns Ettrick Jackpot bred from Knockmult Hannah. The ewe was also champion at Biggar Show.
Reserve honours in the cattle lines went to the Charolais champion, Lagavaich Violet from Gary Wright, Glenlivet. This home-bred heifer by Thurso Sebastian was paraded in calf to Stranagone Verynice.
The inter-breed cattle competitions continued with Ian Miller, Miller Farms taking the overall young bull honours with the Limousin, Millers Artist, whilst John and Sandra Middleton, Cowfords’ Charolais bull, Hollywell Ace stood reserve.
The pairs title went to commercials from Gordon Craig and Jack Hendry, Heads of Auchenderren and Michael and Mark Robertson, Fodderletter. With a pair of Limousins from the Irvines, Anside, and Miller Farms taking reserve.
Charolais from AJR Farms, won the inter-breed beef teams with Aberdeen Angus from Ray Gardiner, Newton, in reserve.
