Former United Auctions auctioneer Donald Morrison has been named the first recipient of the Dougie MacDonald Legacy Award for his outstanding contribution to agriculture.
The award was presented to Mr Morrison by the MacDonald family at Lorn Show, with the Lorn Agricultural Society thanking the family for their bravery, courage and support of the show during a difficult year.
Mr Morrison dedicated 48 years to serving farmers and crofters across the west coast of Scotland, beginning his career at just 17 and continuing until his retirement at the age of 65 in 2018.
During his career, he played a key role in supporting the longevity of livestock markets across Argyll and the islands.
Since retiring, Mr Morrison has continued to support farmers and crofters by sourcing and purchasing livestock, while also promoting agriculture through his work with schools and the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET).
The award has particular significance given Mr Morrison’s close relationship with the late Dougie MacDonald, who joined United Auctions as a young man.
Mr Morrison was a mentor, colleague and friend to Mr MacDonald, helping to build his confidence and supporting him throughout the early stages of his career.
For several years after Mr Morrison’s retirement, the pair travelled together to Stirling Mart each week, reflecting the mutual respect and friendship they had developed.
Accepting the award, Mr Morrison said it was with 'great pride and joy', although it was tinged with sadness following Mr MacDonald’s death at the age of 23 earlier this year.
“I saw a lot of myself in Dougie when he started with United Auctions,” he said.
“He was a young lad straight from school, born and bred in Argyll, with very strong island connections.
“He was an able stocksperson and had a tremendous way and approach with customers. He was prepared to work 24/7.”
Mr Morrison said he had no doubt Mr MacDonald would have gone on to become manager of all the Argyll and Island markets for United Auctions.
He also paid tribute to the loyal customers, family and colleagues who had supported him throughout his own career.
“Working within the auction system entails very early starts and very late finishes, this Dougie did with distinction,” he said.
Mr Morrison also thanked his wife Mary and sons Donald and Ruairidh for their support throughout his career.
While he has received several other honours, including a gold watch and Royal Highland Show long service medal, Mr Morrison said the new award was 'the pinnacle' of them all.
The Lorn Agricultural Society also thanked the MacDonald family for presenting the award at Lorn Show, acknowledging their 'bravery, courage and support' of the event during a difficult year.
