A SUCCESSFUL national competitions weekend was enjoyed by Scotland’s young farmers in Inverness, during the last weekend of February. Kicking off the weekend, SAYFC launched a new cancer campaign which hopes to raise awareness of health and wellbeing issues facing the agricultural industry and the impact of illness on farming families. A pub quiz was held to coincide with MacMillan Cancer supports big mammoth quiz and the winners of the quiz were a mixed east and west team of Jamie Gibson, Claire Hendersonm Andrew Ireland and Lucy Mitchell.

On the Saturday evening, 11 teams competed in a ten-pin bowling competition held at Rollerbowl, which saw Carluke YFC take the top spot – over 200 points ahead of second place winners, Inverross YFC.

The hotly anticipated ‘Member of the Year’ competition was announced at a dance that same night, following interviews with the 11 competitors earlier that day. The judging panel comprised of Margaret Gray, Matthew Struthers and Isobel McCallum and together they awarded first place to Nicky Wilson of Fife and Kinross YFC, with runner up going to Fiona Bell, Clyde and Central YFC and third place to Laura McCulloch, Dumfries and Galloway YFC.

On the Sunday, 9 teams competed in the senior speechmaking competition judged by Russell Gray, Bill Arnot and Fiona Scott. Carluke YFC secured the first prize with team members Andrew Macgregor, Joanne Hall and Lizanne Young. Second place went to Avondale YFC and third place to Mauchline YFC.

Whilst the speechmaking was being contested, teams gathered to take part in a final quiz and the winners were West Renfrewshire YFC, second place went to East Fife YFC and third prize to Udny JAC.
