HEREFORD cattle breeders, Ronald Wilson and son Robert, enjoyed a field day at their local Border Union Show, winning not only their first inter-breed beef championship here, but also the supreme overall champion of champions.
Show stopper was the seven-year-old cow, Romany 1 Julia, by the former Hereford Sire of the Year, Bayridge 1 Atlas. She was paraded with heifer calf at foot, by Robert’s eight-year-old daughter, Lottie Wilson.
Overall champion of champions judge, John Elliot, Rawburn, found his reserve supreme in the inter-breed sheep, which for the second year in succession was the champion park-type North Country Cheviot, from Roderick (Rocket Runciman), Allanshaws.
His leader, a home-bred gimmer, was tapped out ahead of the Suffolk champion, a home-bred gimmer from brothers, Scott and Gavin Brown, Woodhead, Gorebridge, by the overall sheep judge, Jim Robertson, Becks.
Inter-breed beef judge, Clive Davies, Kidderminster, found his reserve overall in the lead Aberdeen-Angus, Fenland My Prize, a 21/2-year-old bull from the Gordon Brooke Estate, Earlston, paraded by stockman, Iain Campbell.
Male champion at the Highland, this bull then teamed up with his stable mate, Linton Gilbertines Rosie, a two-year-old heifer from the same home, to bag the inter-breed pairs honours.
A duo of British Blondes from George Hamilton, Ramrig, scooped the runner-up and comprised Eilean J-Lo a March 2014-born heifer and Ramrig Lego Master, a 21/2-year-old bull.
