A HEIFER from Ayrshire has won the main championship at this year's Smithfield Show, held at the East of England Showground, in Peterborough.
Jeniffer Hyslop's Sassy Lassy, from Balluskie, Girvan, is a 592kg May, 2015-born heifer by the Limousin sire, Waindale UFO and was placed by Scottish judge, Gavin Scott, who praised her 'style and character'.
She was bought from breeders John and Mandy Smith-Jackson, Haltwhistle, at Leyburn market, in March. Since then she won her class at the National Limousin Show and at Agri-Expo, and was Limousin champion and reserve heifer champion at Countryside Live.
Reserve overall was the reserve heifer, Black Pudding, a 588kg, a British Blue cross by the 16,000gns Gass Cheggers, from Edward and Sarah Layton, Leominster, who were at Smithfield for the first time. Bought at Brecon in the spring from Rob Jones, Argoed, it was supreme at Countryside Live.
The steer and exhibitor-bred championship went to Dickie Wright, Bowers Hill, Somerset, with the 588kg Limousin-sired Red Hot, while Neil Slack, Penrith, took the reserve steer title with Red Alert, a Rossignol son which had been champion exhibitor bred at Countryside Live.
He also showed the champion pure-bred, Romford Jola, a Limousin heifer by Carmorn Co-Pilot owned by W. Richardson and Son, Dufton.
