LANARKSHIRE breeder, Ian McGarva, enjoyed a field day at the Border British Blue Club's annual calf show at Carlisle, last week, securing both the champion and the reserve honours.
Mr McGarva, who runs just 10 pedigree cows in his Abington herd based Nether Abington, first took the male championship and supreme overall with the yearling bull, Abington Lionel, a black and white son of Corrandulla Finton. Junior continental champion at the Stars of the Future and male champion at the Borderway Expo, this youngster brought out by Kelly Blackwood and Duncan Davidson is bred from the Aprilton Arnie show heifer, Abington Harriet. Lionel is bound for the breed sale at Carlisle, in October.
Reserve overall was the female champion, Abington Liquorice, a nine-month-old black heifer that stood reserve junior female at the Stars of the Future. She is bred from the 2012 purchase, Lukeroyal Guess ET, a Bringlee Carlos daughter bought here as a maiden heifer, and sired by Lennie Van Het Caloenhof.
