Despite a fairly dismal weather forecast, the sun was certainly shining on Ian McGarva's team at Biggar Show, when his British Blue heifer Abington Lilly, brought out by Kelly Blackwood and Duncan Davidson, bagged the herd's first overall champion of champions accolade here.

The heifer from Nether Abington, was tapped out as supreme champion by Mary Dunlop, Broughton who said: "There were a lot of super champions forward which I am proud to see at Biggar Show and my champion has it all. She is a beautiful beast with a quality carcase."

For the supreme overall, the beef champion was up against the sheep, poultry, dairy, dog, Clydesdale and ridden horse champions.

Show stopper from this lot was a home-bred Blue heifer daughter of Tenace Dela Praule, out of Tamhorn Grace. She stood champion at Lesmahagow earlier in the year, and last year scooped the inter-breed championship at Peebles and breed honours at Moffat.

Reserve overall was Bear, a 15-month-old dog from Leigh Cunningham and Scott White. He was shown as a pup at Abington where he also took home the same prize.

Over in the sheep lines it was Alastair and David McArthur's champion Blackface from Nunnerie, that lifted the inter-breed title. She has previously lifted the reserve championship at the Royal Highland and reserve inter-breed at Moffat two years ago. She is by a £50,000 Dalwyne and out of a ewe by a home-bred son of a £37,000 Dyke.

Following close behind to secure the reserve supreme sheep title was Richard Wood's champion Beltex, a ewe from Kingledores. Champion at Lesmahagow, Kingledores Bethania, is sired by College Awesome and out of a home-bred ewe sired by Viagrow.

A five-year-old Ayrshire cow from DM Lindsay, Harperfield, topped the dairy section. This third calver, calved in May and is producing 55kg a day. She is by Harperfield Coral Reef and out of Barr Sandy Rose – a former champion here in 2011.

Clydesdale champion was Ron and Helen Brewster's Rossie Mhari, a three-year-old filly from the Bandirran Stud, on her first outing. She is by Redcastle Breelee Majestic and out of Rossie Miriam.
