Despite some horrendous wet weather, local exhibitors were out in force to support Carnwath Show where the Lawries from Grangehall, lifted their third supreme championship.

Leading the way this time for the family from Lanark, was the second calved Holstein cow, Grangehall Minco Hatsummer. One of 200 cows milked back home at Grangehall, this VG87-classified cow was going one better than her reserve win at Biggar, the previous weekend.

Calved in December, she is producing 42kg per day and is projected at 11,000kg.

For the supreme overall, the overall judge, Andrew McLean, Kings Arms, Ballantrae, had to select from the lead dairy, sheep, poultry, beef and Clydesdale champions.

Inter-breed sheep as tapped out by Alan Brewster, Wester Borland, Thornhill was a Beltex ewe from Andrew Baillie, Carstairs Mains, which went on to take the reserve champions of champions. A daughter of Eildon Wolverine, out of a home-bred dam by Callacrag Rocky, she was winning her first championship.

Leading the way in the beef section was a Limousin bull from Ian Nimmo, Bogside. His Maraiscote Ocean the reserve male at the Great Yorkshire and second prize winner at the Royal Highland, is a 17-month-old son of the 23,000gns Goldies Comet out of Maraiscote Joline.

Agnus and Alan Jackson, Covington Mill, Thankerton triumphed amongst the Clydesdales with the two-year-old filly, Boat Lady Alisa. She is by Dillars Topgun and her dam is Boat Legend Lady Eliza.

LEADING awards

Dairy (Judge: A Brewster, Wester Borland, Thornhill). Champion of champions and champion – A and E Lawrie, Grangehall with a second calved Holstein, last calved in December. Grangehall Minco Hatsummer, is projected at 11,000kg, producing 42kg per day and is classified VG87. She was reserve champion last weekend at Biggar. Res – W Baillie, Hillhead of Covington with Covington Trigger Heath, a third calver having calved down in February and averaging about 55litres a day. Senior cow – W Baillie. Suckler cows (Judge: D Dickson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie). Champion and reserve – D Hamilton, Tippethill with an eight-year-old British Blue cross Simmental with a May-born bull calf at foot. Last year the cow was placed first here with her calf. Their reserve winner was a Limousin cross Friesian six-year-old cow with a March-born heifer calf.

Beef cows (Judge: D Dickson). Champion – I Nimmo, Bogside, with Maraiscote Ocean, the reserve male at the Great Yorkshire and second prize winner at the Royal Highland. Prime cattle (Judge: D Dickson). Champion – J Paterson, Garrionhaugh with an October 2017-born Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock bred by Neil Mackay and son. All classes – J Paterson.

Teenagers and children – Senior dairy calf – Grace Lawrie, Grangehall. Junior dairy calf – Cayden Lawrie, Grangehall. Dairy young handler – Grace Lawrie. Beef calf – Ella Baillie, Calla. Beef young handler – Under 12 – Abbie Robertson, Murray Terrace. 12-16years – Anna Baillie, Calla.

Clydesdale (Judge: J Anderson, West Glen, Kilmacolm). Champion – A Jackson, Covington Mill, Thankerton, with the two-year-old filly, Boat Lady Alisa. She is sired by Dillars Topgun and out of Boat Legend Lady Eliza. This is her first championship after taking a first prize ticket at Biggar last week. Reserve – A Johnston, Westtown, with the four-year-old, Newlands Lady Rosanna. She is a daughter of Windynow Homer and out of a Rattlinggate dam. Mare – A Johnstone. Filly – A Jackson.

Border Leicester (Judge: D Whyte, Whitelee Gate, Newton Mearns). Champion – J and M Kinloch, Elsrickle Mains, with a three-crop ewe which was reserve breed champion here last year. She is a daughter of Kininmonth Kit Kat. Reserve – J Hamilton, Silvermuir with the second prize ewe, a two-crop sired by a Kilfin tup. All classes – J and M Kinloch.

Crossing-type Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: F Smith, Cloverhill, Broughton). Champion – J and W Bell, High Field, with the home-bred K13 Cottage tup. The two shear is sired by a W1 Booth ram and out of a home-bred ewe. He was on his first outing. Reserve – F Robertson, The Beeches, West Calder,with a one-crop ewe. She is sired by the J21 Midlock and out of a home-bred ewe by E8 Tanhouse. Tup – L Bell. Tup lamb, ewe lamb – J and S Gardiner. Ewe – F Robertson. Gimmer, pairs, group – J Bell.

Traditional Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: F Smith). Champion and reserve – S Nelson, Spittal, with the shearling that was also champion here last year and male champion at Biggar show this year. He is sired by the reserve winner at the show, the two-shear K5 Ashes ram that was bought as a lamb at Carlisle from Frank Johnstone. All classes – S Nelson.

Blackface (Judge: L Welsh, Snar, Crawfordjohn). Champion – M Hamilton, Cobbinshaw, with a previously unshown one-crop ewe by a £13,000 Elmscleugh, out of a home-bred ewe. Reserve – A Provan, Robiesland, with a gimmer sired by the £11,000 Glenrath and out of a daughter of the £5800 Dyke. Senior tup, gimmer, group, three ewe lambs – A Provan. Junior tup, ewe lamb, pair – JMJ Hamilton. Tup lamb – A Smith. Ewe – M Hamilton.

Down section (Judge: D Whyte). Champion – C Robertson, The Beeches, West Calder, with a Suffolk gimmer on her first outing. She is sired by a Capielaw tup. Reserve – E Orr, Lawhead with a Suffolk shearling which is set for the Kelso ram sales in September. He is a son of a None Go Bye ram purchased at Kelso and out of a home-bred ewe. Tup, pair – E Orr. Tup lamb – R Clarke. Ewe – S Bourman. Gimmer – C Robertson. Ewe lamb – A Morton.

Texel (Judge: A Blackwood, Auldhouseburn, Muirkirk). Champion – A Campbell, Strawfrank winning their third consecutive breed win here. Their winner this time was a gimmer sired by Knap Alba which is a son of the 60,000gns Clinterty Yuga Khan and out of a Valentino ewe that is a top flushing ewe within the flock. Reserve – R, M and I Struthers, Collielaw with a tup bought in as a lamb at Lanark by Milnbank Womaniser. Two-shear tup, tup lamb, pair of tup lambs, ewe, pair – R, M and I Struthers. One-shear tup – J Adamson. Gimmer, ewe lamb – A Campbell. Pair of ewe lambs – J Dunlop.

Beltex (Judge: J Cousar, Howcommon, Craigie). Inter-breed sheep and champion – A Baillie, Carstairs Main,s with a ewe picking up her first championship. She is sired by Eildon Wolvering and out of a home-bred dam that is sired by Callacrag Rocky. Reserve – A and E Lawrie, Grangehall, with a gimmer sired by Quarrymount William Wallace. Gimmer – A and E Lawrie. All other classes – A Baillie.

Any other continental (Judge: J Cousar). Champion and reserve – E Orr, Wester Walston. Their champion was a Blue Texel tup lamb sired by Strathellie Benjamin while it's dam is a daughter of a Nantyderri tup. Reserve from the same home was a Blue Texel shearling ram by the same sire and is set for the Carlisle breed sale at the end of the month. Cross-bred shearling – A Baillie. All other classes – E Orr.

Any native breed (Judge: Ms M Morrison, Romanno Mains, West Linton). Champion – Anna Smith, Wester Crosswoodburn, West Calder, with a two-crop Kerry Hill ewe, purchased by Melissa Donald privately. Rare breed (Judge: Ms M Morrison). Champion – D and A Robertson, 100 Murray Terrace, with a Hebridean gimmer on her first outing. Reserve – J and A North, Dykefoot with a ewe lamb also on her first outing. Ewe, ewe lamb – A North. Tup, gimmer, tup lamb, pair – D and A Robertson.

Sheep for breeding purposes. Champion – F Robertson, The Beeches, with a Scotch Mule ewe lamb by a home-bred son of K4 Midlock that will sold at Kelso in September out of a Crosswoodhill ewe. Reserve – M Graham, Greenshields. Mule gimmer, ewe lamb, pairs – F Robertson. Two cross-bred ewes – S and K Cowin. Pair of cross-bred gimmers, pair of cross-bred lambs – M Graham.
