The Holstein cow, Curtismill Aventador Hatascot, secured the champions of champions accolade for the return of Biggar Show last weekend.
The previously unshown fifth calver which classified Ex93 in her last lactation, is jointly owned by Robert Sloan, Cumnock, and Colin Laird, Blyth, Peebles. She is by Coollawn-com Aventador, bred from the VG85 classified dam, Curtismill Zulu Hatascot 42, and was paraded having calved down in May and giving 70litres per day.
“She is a very good sharp cow and her udder and teat attachment was superb. She was a well worthy winner in my eyes and outstanding today,” said supreme show judge, David Baillie, Carnwath, who selected his champion against the beef, sheep, Clydesdale, pony and dog champions.
Reserve honours went to the supreme sheep – a Texel gimmer from Alan Clark, Garngour, Lesmahagow.
The Texel breed which was also hosting the Scottish National attracted a strong number of entries, and saw top award presented to Great Yorkshire Show champion. She is a daughter of the 16,000gns Procters Chumba Wumba, and bred from a ewe by Knock Bantastic. Her great grand dam is a former Royal Highland Show and Great Yorkshire inter-breed champion in 2016 and has bred the 70,000gns Teiglum Young Gun.
Runner up in the sheep lines selected by Ian Goldie, Dumfries was the Bluefaced Leicester crossing type two-crop ewe from the Thornborrow family, Easter Dawyck, Peebles. She is bred from K1 Shafthill and out of H37 Dawyck which stood champion here in 2019.
The Livesey family, Broomhill, took the top ticket in the cattle when their Salers cow and calf outfit got the winning slap from inter-breed judge, Sam McClymont, Tinnis, Selkirk. Their six-year-old cow Cleuchhead Mhairi, is a daughter of Drumlegagh Brandon and bred from Cleuchhead Mhairi 10.
Reserve champion at the Royal Highland Showcase last year, she stood third at this year's Ingliston event with her March-born heifer calf.
Taking the blue and white sash among the cattle was a 13-month-old Limousin heifer from Ian and Moyra Nimmo and son, Andrew, Bogside, Wishaw. Their Maraiscote Sorbet is a Bassingfield Machoman daughter, and stood second at both the Highland and Yorkshire this year.
William Dunbar, secured the Clydesdale honours with the yearling filly, Doura Sorrenta, bought as a foal from Charlotte Young. She is a daughter of Doura Magic Touch and out of Collessie Flash Girl.

Dairy cattle (Judge: R Scott, Shackiehall, Mossblown, Ayr). Champion – C Laird and R Sloan, Blyth, Peebles, with the jointly owned fifth calver, Curtismill Aventador Hatascot. Reserve – E and A Lawrie, Grangehall, Lanark, with the second calver, Grangehall Amino Stella. Charolais (Judge: I Goldie, Greenfield, Cummertrees, Annan). Champion – J Wight and Sons, Midlock,with the July 2021-born bull, Midlock Superior. He is bred from Wissington Jessica, which was bought out of Carlisle having stood numerous local show champions. Reserve – J Forrest, Hillend, Lamington with the 4½ year-old, Ladygill Naughty But Nice. Backed by home-bred genetics she is sired by Ladygill Hennesay and out of the show cow, Edenhurst Jenny. She was previously shown as a heifer where she stood champion at Biggar and Peebles Shows in 2019. Bull – J Wight and Sons. Cow in calf – J Forrest, Hillend. Yeld heifer, calf – C Wight, Carwood.
Limousin (Judge: I Goldie). Champion and reserve – The Nimmo family, Bogside, Wishaw. Champion was the 13-month-old heifer, Maraiscote Sorbet, a Bassingfield Machoman daughter, out of Maraiscote Jellybelly, which goes back to Goldies Comet. Sorbet took second place at both the Highland and Yorkshire this year. Reserve was the reserve male champion at the Great Yorkshire Show, Maraiscote Sauvage. This 15-month-old is again by Machoman but out of Maraiscote Gucci. All classes – I Nimmo.
British Blue (Judge: I Goldie). Champion and reserve – I McGarva, of Nether Abington, Abington. Supreme was the male champion from the Royal Highland Show, Abington Pablo. This September, 2020-born home-bred bull, is a son of Rocco De La Hasse, out of Abington Monico, whose full sister, Abington Lily, was a successful show cow. A full brother to Pablo sold in May at Carlisle for 10,000gns. Reserve was the 17-month-old, Abington Roxanne, which previously stood reserve female at Agri Expo last year. Backed by home-bred genetics, with Abington Nitro used onto the dam, Abington Monica. Bull and heifer – I McGarva. Heifer in calf – D and L Watret.
Prime cattle (Judge: J Smellie, Posso, Kirkton Manor, Peebles). Champion – L Clark, Tornadee, West Shawtonhill, Chapelton, with a Limousin cross yearling heifer. She stood champion at the calf sale in Oban where she was purchased from Robert Currie, Low Dunasherry, and has since landed top tickets at Lesmahagow, Neilston, Newmilns and Fenwick Shows. Reserve – The Nimmo family, Bogside, Wishaw, with their Limousin steer, Sid. He was male champion at the Great Yorkshire Show as well as second at the Highland to the male champion. He is now destined for the Limousin National Show. He is by Bassingfield Machoman and bred from a Goldies Comet daughter. Heifer – L Clark. Steer – I Nimmo.
Beef cow and calf (Judge: J Smellie). Champion – J Forrest, Hillend, with a cow and spring-born bull calf. Reserve – A Warnock, Dreva with a cow and spring-born heifer calf. Cow with spring-born native heifer calf – R Laird, Cambwell. Cow and bull calf – J Forrest. Cow and heifer calf – A Warnock, Dreva. Native cow and bull calf – K Reive, Knowhead. Group of 12 – I Minto, Townhead.
Highland cattle (Judge: S McKay, Duiletter, Lochawe, Delmally). Champion – T Sloan, Hamilton Hall, with the four-year-old cow, Carol 3 of Gray Brae. Having been bought as a calf from Hillary and Douglas Crane, Leadburn, she is a daughter of Blair Rannoch of Lyntoun and out of Carol 2 of Lyntoun. She was paraded with her March-born heifer calf, Somasag of Lyntoun, which is sired by Eoin Mhor 23 of Mottistone. Reserve – G Hyslop, Glentewing, Crawfordjohn, with the two-year-old heifer, Fern 2 of Black Glen. Reserve female at the Highland and Stirling Shows, she was also supreme at Doune and Dunblane. Home-bred, she is by the home-bred sire, Eoin Mhor of Blackglen and out of a bought-in dam, Fern 2 of Ardentraive. Cow in calf and calf – T Sloan, Hamilton Hall. Heifer 2019 – A Prentice. Heifer 2020, heifer 2021 – G Hyslop.

Clydesdales (Judge: P Tennant, Rowhead Terrace, Biggar). Champion – W Dunbar, with the yearling filly, Doura Sorrenta, which was bought as a foal from Charlotte Young. A daughter of Doura Magic Touch, she is bred from Collessie Flash Girl. Reserve – Mrs A Jackson and A Craig, The Boat, Biggar, with the February-born filly, Boat Lady Adele, by Carnaff Perfection and out of Boat Lady Bethany. She was supreme at Dalkeith Show. Foal, two-year-old filly – A Jackson. Yeld mare – J Sheridan. Yearling filly – W Dunbar. Colt – Messrs McMillan. Gelding – S Greenshields.
Texel (Judge: M Millar, Coleraine). Border Leicester (Judge: M Steel, Cessnock Mill, Hurlford). Champion – J and M Kinloch Elsrickle Mains, with a home-bred two-crop ewe. She is a daughter of Lyham Legend, which was purchased at Lanark as a lamb, and out of a Kininmonth KitKat sired-dam. Reserve – J Hamilton, Silvermuir, with the two-shear tup, Drennans Duo, which was bought at Lanark two years ago. He is by Ditton Diver and bred from an Alticane sired-ewe. Shearling, gimmer – J Hamilton. Tup lamb, ewe, ewe lamb, group of four – J and M Kinloch.
Suffolk (Judge: M Steel). Champion and reserve – A Fleming, Benwillen Bents. Champion was a December-born tup lamb, sired by Mullinvale Morelos and out of a Lakeview Larry Lamb sired-ewe. Reserve was a four-crop ewe by Lakeview Larry Lamb and bred from a ewe by Pyeston Magic Hat. Gimmer – E Wilkie. All other classes – A Fleming.
Beltex (Judge: C Copeland, Overhouse, Harray Orkney). Champion and reserve – A Taylor, Heatheryhall, Thankerton. Champion was the two-crop ewe, Lurg Ella, which is jointly owned by Gordon Harrison, having been purchased at Carlisle in 2020. She is by the 5000gns Bailey Brook CR7, and bred from Woodies Classy Girl ET, a Carrigans Bob Lee Swagger daughter. Runner up was a home-bred shearling tup, by the 30,000gns Buckles Dark Dawn and out of Heatheryhall Wallflower which bred the champion at Lanark in 2018. Tup – A Baillie, Carstairs Mains. Blackface (Judge: S McDougall, Blairadam, Kelty). Champion and reserve – A Kennedy, Mitchellhill, Biggar. Champion was a shearling ram jointly owned with Malcolm Coubrough, Hartside, which was purchased at Lanark for £9000 from South Cobbinshaw. He is by a Crossflat sire, out of a £5500 Elmscleugh sired-ewe and stood reserve champion at Dalkeith. Reserve was the breed champion and inter-breed winner from Dalkeith, a home-bred two-crop ewe, by a Gosland son of an £11,000 Auldhouseburn, out of dam by a £9000 Glenrath. She is sired by the two times Royal Highland Show champion, Burndale G1, which was purchased at Carlisle in 2014, out of a home-bred show ewe. Reserve – S Nelson, Spittal, with a home-bred two-shear tup owned in partnership with Dewi Williams from Wales. The tup, Medwyn N2 is by the same sire as the champion. Tup – S Nelson. Shetland (Judge: R Douglas, Cedar Cottage, Cupar). Champion and reserve – D Alcorn, Annavale, Biggar. Supreme was the white gimmer, Annavale Evita, which was on her first outing. She is sired by Muncaster Felix and out of the home-bred ewe, Annavale Bivata. Reserve was the home-bred shearling, Annavale Amilios, by the same sire out of another home-bred dam. Coloured tup lamb, coloured gimmer, coloured ewe lamb – M and L Greenfield. Coloured ewe – F Frame. All white classes – D Alcorn.

Zwartbles (Judge: N Millar, Woodhouse Mains, Lockerbie). Champion – G Smith, Barmurrie, with the four-year-old ewe, Barmurrie Heather. She is a daughter of Barmurrie Dynamite, out of Barmurrie Chrissie, and stood reserve at Cumberland Show. Reserve – P Walton, Glencaple, with the January-born ewe lamb, Beachwood Kimberly. She is a daughter of Wallacetown Cairn, out of Beachwood Holly. Aged tup K Flynn, South Mains. Shearling, tup lamb, ewe, gimmer, group of four – G Smith. Ewe lamb – P Walton.
