The sun shone down on Ochiltree for its midweek show with a great turnout of enthusiastic youngsters parading dairy calves complete with a top quality line-up of milking cattle and a small selection of beef cattle.

Taking the overall championship was the fourth calver, Townlaw All Class Missy, from Bryce and Robert Sloan, Darnlaw, Auchinleck. Holstein champion here last year, she was paraded by stockman, Calum Brown.

“She’s an excellent example of the breed with good rump structure for a medium-sized cow,” said the dairy judge Kevin Lawrie, Myremill, Maybole, who added that she has had four calves and will be in the top 10% in her breed.

The champion was paraded giving 51 litres per day having last produced in November. Classified Ex94, she is a daughter of Silverridge V Allclass and out of the VG88-classified dam, Cottonabbotts Monterey Missy. The beef supreme was tapped out by the judge Alan Robb, Chalmerston, Mauchline, as the 13-month-old Limousin cross bullock, Blackjack from Paul McHarg, Crofthead, Ochiltree. It was bought out of Ayr Market from the Youngs of Tormitchell.

“The champion just had a bit more length to him and walked better in the ring,” said Mr McHarg.

Champion calf was the August-born Holstein Townlaw Pharo Nannette 2 from Grace Walker (10). Sired by Sandy-Valley J Pharo, this calf is out of Townlaw Lighthouse Nannette.

Dozzer was purchased online from Ballymena from James Leonard, bred out of a Charolais cross cow he is sired by Empire. Calf – J Nisbet, Sorn Mains. Beef calf from dairy animal – High Tarbeg. Heifer and bullock and pairs – P McHarg, Crofthead.
