Gargunnock Show: Limousin and Blackface star in inter-breed

Taking the supreme beef honours was the Limousin champion, Garrowby Tarzan, a two-year-old bull from Robert and Jean Graham, that had been bought at Carlisle in October for 12,000gns. He was brought out by herdsman Stewart Bett and his wife Lynsey, and is by Grahams Rooney.

Commenting on his choice of supreme, inter-breed judge, Allan Wight, Midlock, Crawford, said: “He is a really good, well fleshed bull with plenty of breed character and tremendous ends on him.”

Mr Wight found his supreme sheep in a previously unshown Blackface gimmer from John and James Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blair Drummond.

“She’s full of style, character and carries herself with a real attitude,” he said.

Destined for the Royal Highland show. Reserve – Bennie family, Merkins, with a home-bred shearling tup, by a £70,000 Dalchirla and out of a £2000 Midlock-sired ewe. Champion at Drymen. Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: D Cowie). Champion and reserve inter-breed sheep – J Pirie, Blarnavaid, Drymen with a one-crop ewe by the £12,000 P1 Blarnavaid and out of a £5800 Dawyck ewe. Reserve – A McArthur, Cretlevane, Balfron with a tup lamb bred by a £2000 Blarnavaid tup. Ewe with cross lambs, ewe hogg, ewe lamb, group of three – J Pirie. Tup – A Steadman, Dunbrach. Tup lamb – A McArthur.

Champion Texel by J Bennie, Merkins

Cross sheep (Judge: D Huner). Champion – R Bryce, Chalmerston, with a Beltex cross lamb by a Blackadder tup bought at Carlisle for 1200gns. Reserve – T Buchanan, Wester Kepdowrie, Buchlyvie with three Texel cross Cheviot Mule ewe hoggs. Ewe with single lamb, ewe with twin lambs – D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank. Three prime lambs – T Buchanan.

Scotch Mule (D Cowie). Champion – H Gray and L Smith, Drumnessie, Kilsyth, with a one-crop ewe on her first show outing. Bought at Castle Douglas and heading to the Royal Highland Show. Reserve – J Pirie, Blarnavaid, with a home-bred ewe lamb by a Mistyburn tup. Ewe hogg – H Gray and L Smith.

Suffolk (Judge: T Muirhead). Champion and reserve – R Bryce, Chalmerston, with a home-bred ewe on her first outing and reserve with a ewe lamb by a Sitlow ram bought at Kelso for 700gns. Tup lamb, ewe hogg – J Christie, West Carse. Tup – R Bryce. Group of three – Messrs Gibson.

Texel (Judge: T Muirhead). Champion – J Bennie, Merkins with a one-crop Teiglum ewe bought for 2000gns by a Knock sire. Reserve – J Christie, West Carse with a ewe hogg. Ewe lamb, tup lamb – J Bennie. Ewe hogg – J Christie. Tup – D and N Henderson, Whitehouse.

Zwartbles (Judge: F Miskelly). Champion – NR and S Henderson, Whitehouse Farm with the home-bred ewe hogg, Aquila Lhotse sired by Grahams Kingkong. Reserve – Messrs Gibson, Conic, Gartocharn with the ewe lamb Conic Moneypenny. Sired by Greenhill Koffie. Ewe, tup, group of three – Messrs Gibson. Tup lamb – NR and S Henderson.

Any other breed (Judge: D Hunter). Champion and reserve – A Little, East Bracklinn, with a Cheviot ewe and Cheviot tup respectively. Tup lamb – K Little, Letar. Ewe hogg – M Steel, Braevalloch.

Native cattle (Judge: D Hyslop). Champion – J Rettie, Beild with the 18-month-old Aberdeen-Angus heifer Hillfoot’s Evie 019, by Tonley Jester Eric, out of Hillfoot’s Evie 072. Reserve – Lilly Irvine, Wester Myre with the eight-month heifer Mango.

Continental cattle except Limousin (Judge: D Hyslop). Champion and reserve inter-breed beef champion – A Hornall, Falleninch, Stirling with the 16-month Charolais heifer Falleninch Unita. Sired by Falleninch Memo and out of Falleninch Gloria. Heading to the Highland show. Reserve – Redknock Salers, Port of Menteith with the 14-month Salers bull Rednock Tarzan by the French sire Senator bought for €9500, out of Dandylion Dalia. Heading to the Highland show. Aged bull – A Hornall. Cow – R McNeil. Calf – Lisa McKenzie, Ardgate.

Limousin (Judge: D Hyslop). Champion, reserve and inter-breed beef champion – R and J Graham, Bridge of Allan. Supreme was the 12,000gns purchase, Garrowby Tarzan, bought at Carlisle in October. Brought out by herdsman, Stewart Bett and his wife Lynsey he was reserve at Ayr and Drymen and is sired by Grahams Rooney, out of Gunnerfleet Nacian. Reserve was the young bull Grahams Ulysses, by Ampertaine Gigolo out of Grahams Melody. Heading to the Highland show. Young heifer, calf – R and J Graham. Heifer three years – D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank.

Feeding stock (Judge: D Hyslop). Champion – S and L Bett, Stirling, with Electra, the section champion at Ayr and Drymen Shows and reserve champion at the National Calf Show at Beef Expo, J36. Bred by Balfour Baillie and bought at the Thainstone Spectacular for £5000, this 14-month-old Ronick Red Hot-sired heifer also stood champion calf at Livescot in November. Reserve – A Dunn, Redhall, with the Limousin cross heifer Black Diamond. Bullock and pair – Dunn.

British Holstein/Friesian (Judge: G Baillie). Champion and overall dairy – A McMillian, Meldrum, Blairdrummond with the home-bred Holstein cow, Outlay Michelle, a home-bred second calver by Outlay Denovo, out of Hawkland Dalliance Michelle. Reserve – W Brewster, Wester Borland, Kippen with the second calver Holstein Rieka by Meadowlark Secretariat. Heifer, pairs – Messrs Gilliland, Nyadd, Blairdrummond.
