Scottish breeders came home in style from last weekend's Northern Area Jacob Breeders' annual show and sale, at Skipton, having bought the top priced male and female at 4600gns and 2700gns, respectively.
The event which saw ram lambs average more than £700 per head, first saw Gordon Connor and Scott Dalrymple of the Dun-Mor flock from Bridgend, Linlithgow, and Ewen Macmillan, Lurg, Fintry, fork out 4600gns for a lamb from Jean Price's Pentrenant flock from Churchstoke, Powys. Male champion and reserve overall at the pre-sale show, her four-horn ram lamb, Pentrenant Pimms, is by the Blackbrook Fire Balls son, Kinloch Franco – a tup bought here two years ago from Mike Munro, Ladybank, Fife. Pimms is out of a Hope Flash Lad-sired ewe, one of 48 ewes owned by Mrs Price.
Mr Macmillan who runs the Luruha flock also went to 540gns for the third prize ewe lamb, from Mrs Price's husband, Robert, who runs his own Pentre flock. She is by Overdale Robert Price.
A new centre record for females was also achieved when the champion, a gimmer from Wyn and Siwan Harries' Hope flock from Carmarthenshire, was purchased by veteran breeder, Helen Baillie who owns the Hyndshaw flock from Carluke. This four-horned sheep is by Pike Field Braveheart.
The Trumper family, who run the Beiliau flock at Brynderi, Abergavenny, sold the top priced ewe lamb at 850gns with a February-born two-horned sheep Border Windrush, which sold locally to Betty Palmer’s Nettlebed flock in Grindleton.
The family also achieved 700gns for their third prize tup lamb and 510gns for the third prize gimmer, both of which were purchased by J Hardman, Windermere, and 510gns for the third prize shearling ewe.
Fife breeder, Mike Munro also did well with three 500gns sales to include a ram lamb purchased by Shirley Masterman and Roselyn Richards, of the Ghyllcroft flock in Ripon, and a ewe lamb bought to RSS Newall, of Hexham.
The sale attracted an entry of 143 head and saw ram lambs average £736, gimmers at £349, ewe lambs at £197 and shearling rams cash in at £112.
