ONLY 22 bulls were entered for the Western Holstein Club's annual show and sale of bulls at Beeston, which by the end of the day saw averages level at £2609.04, with a top price of 4100gns and a 75% clearance.

Sale leader was the reserve champion bull on inspection, Sterndale Giovanni, from Bill Nadin's Sterndale herd from Ferneydale, Buxton, Derbyshire. July 2017-born, Giovanni is by Mr LR Edg Arvis and bred from Sterndale Silver Ghost which broke her leg shortly after calving. Pembrokeshire-based Beeze Farms, were the final bidders on this youngster whose grand-dam is the Ex90-4yr Sterndale Shot Ghost.

Partner, Yasmin Bradbury of the Peak herd sold the third top priced bull at 3600gns, Peak Arv Royale, also by Mr LR Edg Arvis. Awarded the Wexham Cup title for the bull that gained the most points on inspection and a combination of his ETA for weight of fat, protein and type merit of his sire, dam and grand-dam's classification, he is bred from the top show winning cow, Peak Goldwyn Rhapsody Ex97-6E LP110, and sold to the judge, Tomos Davies of the Rhydygors herd, Carmarthen.

The champion bull on inspection was Mick and Jean Gould's Woodmarsh Contract, a May 2017-born son of Woodmarsh Contrast, out of Woodmarsh Iota Countess, from Bowmere Heath, Shrewsbury. Bred from 12 successive generations of VG or Ex dams, made 3800gns selling to JE Seals and Son, Derbyshire.
